Burlington Cemetery, Longmont, Colorado http://files.usgwarchives.net/co/boulder/cemeteries/burlington.txt Donated by: Chrisy Griffith Burlington Cemetery in Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado This transcription of graves is a combination of walking through and copying information from the gravestones, looking at books at the library, and cross-referencing them with a list produced by Dwight E. Ward in 1987 and updated by the Longmont Genealogical Society in 1994. He based his records on maps, a list produced by Irene Hart Greenwood in 1971, another earlier list done by an unknown author and some additional research. Mr. Ward’s and Ms. Greenwoods lists can also be viewed at the Longmont Public Library. Mr. Ward writes, According to information that was printed in Mr. Carl H. Knaus’ obituary, ‘Burlington Cemetery was the first cemetery used by early settlers of this area. The earliest marked burial was in 1864, although it is believed that there are earlier burials. In 1887 those families with burials at the cemetery purchased the seven acres for $17.50 and formed the Burlington Cemetery Association. This association has been carried on and supported by the descendants of that original group.’ The plat map of Burlington Cemetery that is on file with Boulder County Clerk and Recorder has a note that states, ‘The original cemetery land extended west of South Sunset Street and was divided into Blocks 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. No burials were ever made in these blocks, and the present cemetery includes only Blocks 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, which are subdivided into the lots shown. Information about the purchasers of each block and lot is available at the end of the list of burials. The blocks west of Sunset Drive, that were originally part of Burlington Cemetery, have been purchased for the Pratt Family Cemetery and park. If you go to Burlington Cemetery and try to locate a grave, a good hint for finding some of the hard-to-find ones is look for iris plants. These have been planted around many of the sites to make them easier to locate. Brief biographies about the individuals listed with endnotes can be found in the book, Colorado Families: A Territorial Heritage. A few bits of information for the endnotes were extracted to show inter-relationships between several of the individuals buried in this cemetery. ********************************************************************************************************** Contributed for use by the USGenWeb Project (http://www.usgenweb.org) Archives and by the COGenWeb Project Archives USGenWeb Project.
