Taylor, transcriber; Christine Toups, assistant An Important Note Re Beauvoir Confederate Cemetery Markers Marker inscriptions at Beauvoir Confederate Cemetery should not be considered factual without further verification. There are often striking differences between information conveyed in marker inscriptions and information noted in Jefferson Davis Soldiers Home. Researchers are very strongly urged to compare inscriptions against resident records created by Jefferson Davis Soldiers Home, now preserved at the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library. A synopsis of these records may be found at www.beauvoir.org. Directions to Beauvoir Confederate Cemetery From I-10 Mississippi (east-west interstate running along the gulf coast), exit to Highway 90 (aka Beach Blvd), Biloxi, Mississippi. Beauvior estate is very visible on the landside of Highway 90 at the corner of Highway 90 and Beauvoir Road, located slightly west of President Casino and Resort and immediately east of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum. Entrance to the grounds is from Highway 90. There is a nominal fee to tour the grounds, which include the cemetery. Historical Notes Beauvoir was the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. After Davis' death, Beauvoir evolved into the Jefferson Davis Soldiers Home, a retirement home and hospital facility for disabled and/or indigent Confederate veterans and their dependents. Many of these veterans and their dependents are buried at Beauvoir Confederate Cemetery, which is located at the extreme northwest corner of the estate. The cemetery contains a total of 771 graves, most of them marked. The cemetery contains the grave of Sam Davis, father of Jefferson Davis, whose body was moved to Beauvoir when the Mississippi River threatened his original gravesite at Hurricane Plantation. The cemetery also includes the body and grave of the Unknown Confederate Solider, entombed in an above-ground granite shrine. The cemetery was closed in the 1950s following the burial of the last residents of the Jefferson Davis Soldiers Home. The property, which is owned by the Mississippi Division of the United Sons of the Confederacy and maintained as a non-profit museum and research center, includes the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Museum; the Confederate Veterans Hospital, now acting as a secondary display museum; the main house "Beauvoir" and outlying buildings; and extensive grounds. Details concerning Beauvoir may be obtained directly from the museum at 228.388.9074. Errors and Corrections Errors will be corrected as quickly as humanly possible.
