Harold was born and raised in rural Ohio. At age 18 he joined the Navy and served in the engine rooms on Destroyers, seeing action in the Korean War. He met his wife, Ada, on a blind date when they both lived in southern California. That date was dancing to the Lawrence Welk Orchestra. They were married in September of 1955. Prior to the marriage, Harold changed to the Air Force so he and Ada could be together more when they were married. With the Air Force, they were stationed at bases in Ohio, New Mexico, Alaska, North Dakota, Spain, Turkey, and Alabama. Harold worked in the Liquid Oxygen Plants on the bases for most of his Air Force career. Harold retired from the military in 1970. After a year near his hometown in Ohio, he and Ada decided Anchorage, Alaska, was where they wanted to live, so they moved to Anchorage. Harold got a job in the Power Plant on Fort Richardson. He retired from that job in 1987. Then Harold worked as an Assistant in the Automotive and Diesel Department of the University of Alaska Anchorage and retired a third time after more than five years there. Harold was a very hard worker, always having work on the side, generally related to auto mechanics, which was a lifelong interest. Along with mechanical work, Harold enjoyed activities with his family, fishing, dancing, gardening, and other interests. He loved to talk with people and to socialize. Harold was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had various callings in the church, and for many years was a diligent Home Teacher. He also helped a lot with the church's Welfare Services in Alaska. Harold and Ada, and their three children, were sealed together for time and all eternity in the LDS church's Hawaii Temple in 1974, which gives great comfort to the family now, knowing they are still a complete and whole family. Harold and Ada moved to the Lower '48 in 2003, and eventually settled in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Harold is survived by his wife, Ada, and their three children, Chuck (Lisa) of Eagle River, Alaska, Garnet (Mike) of Pendleton, Oregon, and Marina of Orem, Utah, by five grandchildren, Tiffany (Jesse), Kenny (Michelle), Travis, Krystal, and Sarah, and by six great grandchildren, Keegan, Kinley, Karson, Logan, Natalie, and Adina. Funeral services were held November 17, 2009, in Pleasant Grove, Utah, provided by Olpin Family Mortuary and the Pleasant Grove Seventh Ward. Harold's final earthly resting place is in the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery, near Camp Williams. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.olpinmortuary.com.
