Roylance died Jan. 8, 2010, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. His sons and brother Joel were at his bedside. Burial will be at 2 p.m. May 28 at Angelus Memorial Park, Mile 12.5 Old Glenn Highway, just past the Butte. Donn was born March 6, 1941, in Anchorage to Fredrick and Margaret Roylance. He was a lifelong Alaskan who grew up in Anchorage during the '40s and '50s, and he often recalled the days when most streets in town were dirt and mud. He played baseball as a boy and was an outstanding pitcher. As a young man he enjoyed working on and racing cars. He married Carol Evans in 1961 and they had three children. He worked at Safeway and Denali Fuel Co. during the '60s. He loved fishing, hunting and riding snowmachines and he thoroughly enjoyed the Alaska outdoors. During the pipeline boom of the 1970s, he operated tractor-trailer rigs throughout Southcentral and the Interior. During the '80s, he worked for Stephans Excavating and operated heavy equipment and drove dump trucks to haul "dirt in the summer and snow in the winter." He continued as a "big rig" driver throughout the '90s, retiring two years ago after covering "a million Alaskan miles." His nephews can still remember the thrill they experienced when Uncle Donn let them sit in his lap and steer the semi down the road for a few miles. Donn enjoyed life and was proud of his kids. He liked to joke and laugh and he told you what he thought. He was keen-witted and affable and he liked to see how fast he could make a machine move. He traveled parts of the U.S. and Europe but he always said that "there's no place like Alaska." He will always be loved. "May he find peace and rest in Heavenly arms," his family said. He is survived by his aunt, Mary Johnson; sister, Susanne Evarts of Nevada; three younger brothers, James, Jonathan and Joel, all of Anchorage; and his children, Donny, Rick and April Spencer.
