The week after the Brayton chapel was dedicated, the Sixth Ward held its first sacrament meeting in the new building. Kerma Kenely relates the following incident: The tones of the lovely new organ beckoned the members into the chapel, and a special spirit was evident throughout the meeting. At the conclusion, Nadene Calderwood took her place at the organ and, under the direction of Charmaine Welling, playing the introduction for the closing hymn. As the audience began to sing, the B foot pedal stuck and it remained stuck and playing loudly thoughout the four verses of the hymn. (Sister Welling maintains that all verses of a hymn should be sung regardless.) No change of expression showed in Charmaine’s face as she performed her calling. The audience attempted to retain composure, but the solemnity vanished as whispers and giggles inevitably burst forth.
