In the late 1800's cheifs Kohklux and Daanawak gave permission to Presbyterian missionaries to build a mission school to educate local native children. The current town of Haines developed around the mission. Eventually as the area became settled by more and more people, and Ft. Wm. H. Seward was built in 1903, this cemetary may have been heavily used. The end of the Presbyterian mission era came with the end of Haines House, about 1960 at which time it was a juvenile delinquent facility. Apparently many of the stones, most of the stones actually, were removed at some point to make room for a city park. Presently it is unclear how many graves, and how far they extend as all traces were long ago removed. It was assumed when the new section of Tlingit park was built around 2000 that no digging, or building would be allowed to happen in the grassy area for fear of digging up graves. Today the cemetary strip that is left is all that remains of what appears to have been a goodly sized burial ground. =================================================================================================================================================================================================================================== LAST NAME FIRST NAME BIRTH DEATH INSCRIPTION/NOTES TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES =================================================================================================================================================================================================================================== Godbolt Frederick Born May 22 1847 Died Oct. 2 1900 IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL I believe Frederick's wife's name was Marguerite. =================================================================================================================================================================================================================================== LAST NAME FIRST NAME BIRTH DEATH INSCRIPTION/NOTES TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES =================================================================================================================================================================================================================================== Jackson Louisa .
