  HAINES. A p o and settlement, also known as Haines Mission, on Lynn Canal,
near the mouth of the Chilkat river, 15 miles s of Skagway, the nearest banking
point, and 85 miles n w of Juneau. Sustains 2 hotels and a Presbyterian church.
Mining operations are carried on along the Chilkat river and its branches. The
place has steamboat communication with Skagway, Juneau, Sitka and Fort Wrangel.
