An incorporated city, the metropolis of Alaska, is located on Gastineau Channel, opposite Douglas island, 900 miles from Seattle, Wash. and 110 miles from Skagway. It was settled in 1880 and derives its name from Joseph Juneau, a Canadian Frenchman, who discovered gold in the vicinity about that time. It is the location of the first district of the U S court of Alaska and a U S customs office, The last enactment of congress regarding the government of Alaska reads: "An act making further provision for the civil government for Alaska and for other purposes." Title 1. chapter 1, section 1. Seat of Government. —That the territory ceded to the United States by Russia, by the treaty of March 30, 1867, and known as Alaska, shall constitute a civil and judicial district, the government of which shall be organized and administered as hereinafter provided.
