HOLY ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH CEMETERY
Also known as the RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CEMETERY
Kenai, Alaska

The Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church Cemetery is located in Kenai,
Kenai Peninsula Borough, Alaska. It is on an unnamed road off of Mission Ave. As you stand in
front of the Russian Orthodox Church facing out, the road can be seen to the right intersecting at
the curve. Follow the dirt road to the right. The cemetery is about 100 yards down this road. It is
owned and maintained by the Church. For cemetery location map see page 372.

The notation in parenthesis following the cemetery marker inscription is additional information.
The Book of the Deceased refers to the Book of the Deceased of the Russian Orthodox Holy
Assumption Church for the years 1954 - 1959. The notation "1983" refers to information found in
Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Death Records and Cemetery Inscriptions published in 1983 by the
Kenai Totem Tracers. The fencing around a grave is called a crib. The cemetery was last read on
November 13, 2003. Updated February 3, 2004.

This information is transcribed from "Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Death 
Records and Cemetery Inscriptions" compiled by Kenai Totem Tracers, 
copyright 1983, pages 42 - 43.

This cemetery is located 1/8 mile northeast of the Russian Orthodox 
Church.  The land was granted to the Church as part of the original 
Russian grant.  The earliest marked and dated grave is that of Lydia 
DOLCHOK (d. July 8, 1933) but undoubtedly many of the unmarked graves 
are of an earlier date.  Although the cemetery is primarily for 
parishioners of the Holy Assumption Church, non-orthodox family members 
are sometimes buried there with the permission of the church council.  
The cemetery is under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church 
and is maintained by the parishioners.

It is not possible to map the cemetery as present as it follows no 
discernible pattern.  Copses of trees and paths through brushy area 
confuse whatever pattern was originally planned.  Hence the names will 
be listed in alphabetical order.

The old Russian Chapel, which adjoins the church, is a burial memorial 
for two Russian priests, Egumen NICOLIAS, first priest in Kenai, and 
Makar IVANOFF, second priest.  They are interred under the Chapel.
