One of the nicer and better maintained cemeteries on the Kenai Peninsula is located at Mile 1 1/2 on Kalifornsky Beach Road, directly across from the Kasilof Airport. Back when Alaska was still a territory, the local homesteaders petitioned the government for land for a cemetery. the Kasilof - Cohoe Cemetery Association was formed, 20 acres was obtained and the first burial in the new cemetery was in January, 1954. Twenty-five years and some paperwork later ownership was granted in 1981. Originally started for local people, the cemetery accepts anyone requesting burial there at $100 per grave, $50 for an infant. The association is a non-profit organization, which at last count had 53 active members. They meet annually and have a clean-up day prior to Memorial Day, complete with children, teenagers with tape decks and old-timers who lovingly clean up and clear away with love and memories. When the new highway was put in, 3 acres of the original 20 was given up to the state, and the remainder is taken care of by a caretaker who apparently cares what it looks like, as it is always in lovely condition. It is noted that an expert in the field has estimated that 1000 graves per acre is possible, which would, in time, make a large cemetery. but the association is generous with its sites and it is unlikely this goal will be reached. ==========================================================================================
