Born Jan. 24, 1947, in Alaska, he was only child of Mary (Dull) and Sylvester Chieslak. Originally from Kodiak, the family homesteaded in Cohoe. He graduated from high school in Kenai in 1961 and left for the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego, where he began his naval career, which took him to Vietnam. He later served in the Philippines. He then worked for many years as chief engineer of tugs for Crowley Maritime and continued his family's tradition of commercial fishing. His family wrote, "He will be missed as a storyteller, and a generous, loyal, giant-hearted, funny man." Surviving him are his son, John Straka of Arizona; daughter, Kristina Rasmussen and husband, Scott Rasmussen, of Friday Harbor, Wash.; granddaughters, Kasey and Kori Rasmussen; and hundreds of cousins, aunts, uncles, adopted brothers and sisters, and friends. His ashes will be scattered at sea by his family and a celebration of his life is being planned. Donations may be made to the Robert Chieslak Memorial Fund in the name of Kristina Rasmussen at any branch of Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, or mail to P.O. Box 196613, Anchorage 99519, to assist the family with costs and travel to Alaska.
