  AFOGNAK. A discontinued p o on an island of the same name, 650 miles w of

Sitka, and 26 n w of Kodiak, the nearest p o and shipping point. Contains a

Greek church and a government school. Large tracts of timber are in the

vicinity, including spruce, cottonwood, birch and alder. Signs of gold dep9'Sits

are also found. Salmon, cod and herring fishing, hunting for furs and fox

raising are the principal industries. Potatoes and early vegetables are grown.
