A town on an island of the same name in Norton sound. 65 miles from the mouth of the Yukon river and 125 s e of Nome, the nearest banking point. The town was settled by the Russians in 1835 and named Michaelovsky. It has a miscellaneous collection of old Russian houses, native cabins and the warehouses and stores of the various trading- and commercial companies. It is an important transfer point between the ocean and Yukon river points. Has large roomy wharves for the reception and shipment of freight. The headquarters of the Department of Alaska of the U S army is located here, as is also the second district of the U S court and a customs office. During the season of navigation it has steamboat communication with Yukon river points and Seattle. Wash, from which place it is distant about 2,700 miles.
