  SHAKAN. Was first settled in 1884. The principal industries are fishing, salt

and lumber mnfg, mining and marble quarrying. The town is located at the upper

end of Prince of Wales Island, and mail is delivered semi-monthly by steamer

from Wrangel, 45 miles e.
