  EAGLE. A p o and mining settlement, also known as Eagle City on the Yukon

river at the mouth of Mission creek. 615 miles n w of Skagway and 110 n w of

Dawson, N W T, its banking point. The place was first settled in 1897, platted,

in January, 1898, and contains Presbyterian and Catholic churches, 2 saw mills

and several general stores. The townsite is known on the government maps of the

U S coast and geodetic survey, as Belle Isle. The U S District Court and the U S

Customs House are located here, also the military post of Fort Egbert. Eagle is

the outfitting point for the miners located along American Bluff, Marion Canyon,

Gravel, Caribou Mission and Dome Creeks. The U S government has a telephone line

established here. Shipments may be made by boat via St Michael or by boat to

Skagway and from there by overland route via Dawson. Pop, 458.
