Mumford De Jarnette never lived in Alabama, but his wife, Frances Hannah Pickett De Jarnette and her surviving children, John Pemberton De Jarnette, James Terry De Jarnette, William Pickett De Jarnette, and Martha Owen De Jarnette all came to Alabama. All but Martha can be found in Autauga Co. in the 1850 census. Martha had married Cornelius Robinson and was living in Lowndes County. After Frances Hannah Pickett De Jarnette died, the prayer book was kept by Martha Owen De Jarnette Robinson. So, this prayer book listing has genealogical importance to Autauga for the DeJarnettes and to Lowndes for the Robinsons. There are two entries in this Prayer book unexplained: 'This book belongs to Christopher De Jarnette, 1801.' 'Mumford De Jarnette, his book.' The following was written by Francis Kathleen Robinson, granddaughter of Martha Owen DeJarnette Robinson, in 1934: "Evidently, at the death of Christopher DeJarnette, this book passed into the hands of others, as the first birth records are of the John DeJarnette line. At his death in 1785, it was owned by Mumford DeJarnette of Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC. At his sudden death, it passed to the hands of John P(emberton) DeJarnette and at his death it went to the James Terry DeJarnette line and has so remained to date, 1934. "According to the traditions of the family, John, Christopher, and Montford DeJarnette, brothers and Huguenots, left France in 1685 or before. Their father was a Marquise. One maiden aunt, a sister of the Marquise, was beheaded since she would not leave France or become a Catholic. These brothers went to England until they could take passage to America. While in England, they joined the Church of England as it was the nearest allied to their faith. It was in England that they bought the Prayer book in which are the names of most of our direct line, from John DeJarnette to the fourth and fifth generations since then. "Our line runs, John DeJarnette, 1748-1785, his son Mumford, 1776-1823; his daughter Martha Owen DeJarnette Robinson, 1812-1896; her son John William Robinson, 1843-1884, then his five daughters – Neil, Mary Owen, Francis Kathleen, Bessie May, and Jessie Belle Robinson." The book, at one time belonged to Mrs. Samuel A. Caldwell, probably in the 1930's. This was copied by Mrs. E. S. Garrett (Frances Kathleen Robinson- Garrett) for the Pickett Chapter of the DAR, of which she was a founding member. Births John De Jarnette, born June 22, 1748, Prince Edward County, VA.
