Withers, of Washington, Alabama, at the Jefferson Medical College, Alabama, during the winter of 1835 and the summer of 1836, where he took partial courses in anatomy, materia-medica, chemistry, and practice, also paying special attention to the lectures of Dr. W. P. C. Barton on medical botany. He attended the clinics of the Pennsylvania and Blockley Hospitals, and took a full course at the Jefferson College the ensuing winter. He returned to Alabama in the spring of 1837, and commenced practice with his former preceptor. In November he visited New Orleans, and entered the medical department of the University of Louisiana, from which institution he graduated the following spring. Returning to his former location he continued to practice there until 1845, when he settled in Prattsville in a general surgical and medical practice... Ref: Stone, R.
