Cemetery is 1.7 mile on left. Approximately 100 yards from road. Highly overgrown. No fence. It is believed that this cemetery originally had more gravesites. This cannot be proven. There is record of another grave at this location but the cemetery is so highly overgrown, I could not see another. The is a sign on an elm tree that says, "Independence Cemetery, Auburn Hill". The spelling on the stones have NOT been altered from the original. Missing information or my personal observation is in parenthesis( ). Jackson, Oliver Perry February 16, 1820 January 2, 1822 To the Memory of Oliver Perry, fifth son of James and Temperance Jackson who was born on the 16th day of Feb 1820 and died on the 2nd of Jan 1822 Jackson, Walter Clark December 7, 1808 December 7, 1826 Sacred to the Memory of Walter Clark Jackson who was born in Baldwin County, Georgia On the 7th of December 188 and died at Ellerslie, Rocky Mount, Ala where he was attending his Academic Course of Study on the 7th of September 1826 Jackson, James Wilson September 4, 1813 January 22, 1822 To the sacred memory of James Wilson Jackson third son of James & Temperance Jackson Who was born on the 4th of September, 1813 and died at the University of Alabama of which He was a Member, on the 22nd of January 1832 Jackson, James August 10, 1773 July 19, 1832 James Jackson who was born in Wilkes County, George on the 10th of August 1773 and having filled Several responsible offices; migrated from his native state in 1817 to Alabama Territory, where he was elected and served in the convention which framed the constitution of the state of that name. He effectually Served in each branch of the legislature. The ( ) worth endeared him to his relations and friends. His charities were dispursed with liberal hand on his vowed principle ( ) had to spare, should succour the need. He died at his residence Auburn Hill, on the 1 9th of July, 1832. Dear Departed Shade! Thou art not forgotten. The memory lives and will live as long as those shall...be aquainted with thy virtues. A Father, a Brother, a Friend, thy kindness, thy tenderness, thy affection, thy constancy is remembered. THUS PASSES AWAY MAN! He may bloom today and have honors heaped upon, ( ) tomorrow he is not, for thy hath returneth into dust and his spirit with God who gave it. Clepper, Mary Ann May 11, 1828 February 26, 1849 Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann Clepper, the wife of Moses Clepper and daughter of Robert and Penelope Motley, who was born the 11th day of May, 1828 and departed this life on the 26th day of February, 1849 (There are 2 marble slabs close to this headstone. I believe that the headstone belongs to one of the graves) (All are very large stones made of marble. Approximately 24 x 48. The cemetery is heavily overgrown and not visible from the road.)
