Wednesday, September 2, 1903 page 11 Bishop Jackson has Monument Handsome Shaft Unveiled in Opelika Cemetary Yesterday Morning. Eufaula, Ala., September 1 - (Special.) A beautiful monument was placed over the grave of the late Bishop Jackson in Fairview cemetary here this morning. The monument was selected by a committee of clergymen, consisting of Revs. J. T. Beard, Stewart McQeen and I. O. Adams, who were appointed by the clergyman's meeting held at the council that met in Birmingham in May, 1902. It bears the following inscriptions: At the foot, "Jackson;" at the head, "Henry Melville Jackson;" on the right side, "Consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of Alabama January 21, 1891;" on the left side, "Born in Louisburg, Va., July 28, 1840. Died at Roseland, near Eufaula, May 14, 1900." The monument is simple yet very handsome and occupies a beautiful site in one of the prettiest portions of the cemetary. Additional Comments: [note from transcriber: the original death notice/obituary for Rev. H. M. Jackson ran in the May 5, 1900 Atlanta newspaper and indicated the date of death to be May 4, 1900. Since this record occurs first, it is most likely to be correct (unless someone foresaw the future by 10 days). Many other sources site the date of death as May 4. However, there are several sources that site the date of death as May 14 and it is possible that the origin of that mistake was either this article or the monument placed on Henry Jackson's grave. If the monument is incorrect, then this article is simply reporting what the monument says and whomever made the monument made a mistake when engraving the date of death. If the monument is correct than this article just contains a typing error. Either way, this mistake has corrupted several sources, including Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans - Vol I-X (10). -- Tania A.
