This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Mary Ann Nichols ================================================================================ January 1999 Will of Peter Hagler: Barbour County, AL [Archives- Montgomery, AL LG2410 Reel 20, pp 470-772] Be it remembered that I, Peter Hagler of the State and county aforesaid being feeble in health but sound in mind, and wishing to divide my worldly effects among my heirs, knowing that my time is short in this life- 1st I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Sarah, my present place of residence the plantation where I now resie, containing one hundred and twenty acres, (120) be the same more or less. My wagon, two horses, two cows & calves, two sows & pigs, Two? head of sheep. All my household furniture, my plantation tools, also my man Bill, a slave, to have and to hold for her exclusive benefit owning her life time and widowhood. 2nd I give and bequeath to my son John, the sum of five Dollars ($5) besides what he has received already of me. 3rd I give and bequeath unto my son Charles, seven Dollars ($7) besides what he has received from me heretofore. 4th I give and bequeath to my son in law Morton Thomas the sum of five Dollars, to him and his Heirs by my Daughter, besides what they have already received of me. 5th I give and bequeath to my son in law Joel Thomas Five Dollars ($5) to him and his heirs by me Daughter, besides what they have already received from me. 6th To my first wife (Margaret) who lives in the State of North Carolina, I give and bequeath to her the sum of Twenty Dollars ($20) which she may divide among her three illegitimate children, Hiram her son & two daughters named Mary & Patsey, I lived were thare?? ten years in North Carolina in a miserable condition. I had her and her paramour bound over to the peace I offered her all the inducement in my power to follow me and come to this State (Ala.) although guilty in three instances of the crime of adultery, she rejected all my propositions, she already received more than her legal share of my property. I furthermore do bar her from receiving any more benefit from my Estate. 7th I give and bequeath to my two sons Jacob and Thomas & my daughter Betsey, the wife of Charles Long, all the balance of my property, consisting of land, bonds of livly? of hands, Ready Money, accounts, & ? cattle, horses, hogs and sheep, not already enumerated To be equally divided among them and their heirs forever- 8th At the death of my beloved wife Sarah or her marriage, the lands and the slave Bill, I bequeath unto the last three named heirs as named in the 7th article of this will to be equally divided among them & their Heirs forever. Lastly I appoint my son in law Charles Long, my two sons Jacob & Thomas Hagler my Executors of this my last will and testament. My Executors will pay all my legal debts and bisfister?? all my legal obligations for or against me the same as if I were present myself. Finally I hereby resolve all will & Testamentaries heretofore made by me and declare this to be my last will and Testament--signed and sealed this 12 day of Feby in the year of the Lord & Savior One thousand Eight hundred and fifty two (1852) and the Seventy sixth year of the Independence of the United States of North American.
