The circumstances as related to the editor of the Reporter, are as follows: "Cox was Justice of the Peace, and Palmer was the Constable. Cox had issued an execution and placed it in the hands of Palmer, and instructed him to levy on some property, which Palmer refused to do; a dispute arose and resulted in the death of Cox. The weapon used by Palmer was a knife, with which he stabbed Cox in several places, who lived but a short time after the wounds were inflicted. Palmer fled, and had not been arrested when our informant left Maplesville. Cox was a quiet, clever gentleman, and has left a family and a large number of friends to mourn his sudden death."— Tuscaloosa Observer, June 1.
