Charity was the daughter of Joseph Calvin Perry and Frances Holder, who were both likely born in North Carolina, but the families appear to have migrated to Alabama through Tennessee. Charity was the neighborhood midwife, and when someone came to get her, her message was to tell the woman in labor to "have two cups of tea, and I'll be there before she finishes the second."
