Take Blount County Road #25 North 3 miles to Ebell Road (on left). Cemetery is 100 yards ahead on right of unpaved road. Actual spelling is "Ebel" on entrance marker. There is a large (5 ft. wide by 7 ft. high) vertical stone, professionally prepared and installed at the northeastern edge of the cemetery. The text on the stone reads as follows: FRENCH (presumed burial site) James Lewis French Eleanor Shanks French Born 1788 Spartanburg S.C. Born 1784 Tennessee Died 1873 Ebell Died 1860 Ebell James and Eleanor moved to Ebell about 1831 from TN. He was a Methodist minister and farmer. They had 11 children, most of whom moved to Navarro County, TX (1850-1870). James was the son of Lafford French (Born 1753 Raritan, NJ) of SC. Lafford was a veteran of the revolutionary war. He died Sept 11 1831 and was buried in Rutherford County NC. Thomas Ffrench, progenitor, was born 1639 in Nether Heyford, England. He was a Quaker who was persecuted for his beliefs. He, his wife and nine children came on HMS Kent and landed at Burlington NJ August 1680. He died 1699. Lineage: Thomas Ffrench 1639 Thomas Jr. 1667 Joseph 1697 Joseph Jr. ?
