This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Jim Rice ================================================================================= December 1998 RICETOWN CHAPEL CEMETERY, BLOUNT COUNTY, AL From James Thomas Rice, Sr. 170 Old Fort Road Athens, GA 30606-1436 My great grandfather, James Monroe Rice, brought his entire family, including two married children and their families, to this area in late 1859 or early 1860. His date of death, August 18, 1865 appears to be the earliest on any of the tombstones in the cemetery, and the cemetery property was set aside by his sons. JMR's children buried here are Jennie Rice Haun (Jane Rice who had married Andrew Hawn/Haun/Hon 1849 in Knox Co., TN), John Rice (who had married Margaret Cumpton/Compton 1855 in Knox Co., TN), William Rice (who married Elizabeth Sanders 1869 in AL), D.P. Rice (David Preston Rice, who married Frances Adelaide Willoughby 1869 in AL), Martha Rice, and M.L. Rice (Marcus Lafayette "Jake" Rice who married Catharine J. "Kate" Willoughby 1872 in AL). Two other children (Rebecca, wife of Monroe Whaley, and Mary, wife of James M. James) are buried in other area cemeteries. A number of other graves are those of JMR's descendants, of his wife, Sarah Hedrick/Headrick Rice's relatives, and of in-laws of JMR/SH children, but many others represent area families not known to be related to JMR. The cemetery is still active and undoubtedly several graves have been added since 1971. It wasn't until I was proofing my typescripting of this listing that I noticed how many of the graves are of infants and children. How sad for those parents. It was not an easy time in which to survive to adulthood. Where there are differences between this listing and the other published one, I have inserted parenthetical dates or letters with question marks. I would be happy to try to field questions about the families in this cemetery if I can. Regards, James T. Rice, Sr. (jrice@arches.uga.edu) The cemetery is located in Blount County, AL. To reach it from nearby I-65, take Exit 289, which is labeled "Empire-Blount Springs" onto Blount County Road No. 5. Go East (toward Blount Springs) on Road No. 5 for 0.5 miles and take a left onto Chapel Road (there is a sign saying Ricetown Cemetery). From that turn, go 1.2 miles and there will be an older farm house on a rise on your left and very near the road. I believe there is also a small sign pointing to Ricetown Chapel and Cemetery in the driveway of that house. Turn left into the gravel drive at that sign and follow it around behind the house and on up the hill a hundred yards or so to the Chapel and the Cemetery.
