The sign on the window reads “A. T. Danforth Fancy Groceries.” The exact date of the photograph is unknown at this time. It is known that a tornado destroyed the Danforth Store on May 27, 1917 along with most other structures in the small community of Village Springs. Based on old maps of the community, it is believed the Danforth Grocery building was located on the east side of Railroad Street (Birmingham to Oneonta Highway)and the L & N Railroad tracks. Note that a railroad boxcar is shown to the right side of the picture and a railroad work cart can be seen to the left side. According to Elaine Clements Gardner, a granddaughter of Alexander and Mary Danforth, the gentlemen in the suit coat is Alexander and his wife, Mrs. Mary Anna Mills Danforth, is shown in the long skirt. The other persons are unknown at this time. Photograph courtesy of Elaine Clements Gardner, Chester, VA.
