The 4th, 5th and 6th grade students at Remlap Elementary School are shown in 
this photograph. The photograph was made sometime during the 1947-48 school 
year. The school was located in the small farming community of Remlap in Blount 
County, Alabama. The school had two classrooms, one room housed grades 1 
through 3 and the other housed grades 4 through 6. During the 1947-48 school 
year, Mrs. Sudie Cowden Hicks, taught grades 1-3 and Mrs Nora or Norma Bowman 
Smith, grades 4-6. It was a typical 1940's Alabama elementary school; outdoor 
privys, coal burning stoves, and a dug well for drinking water. The noon meal 
was brought from home by each student, usually in a brown paper bag. The 
physical facilities were limited, but our teachers were dedicated professionals 
and made sure students got a good basic education that prepared them for high 
school and college. The little school no longer stands today having been 
abandoned and razed some years ago. But, good memories of our teachers, of 
acquiring a love for learning, and of friendship with our fellow students are 
still a part of us after all these years.
