The Platt house was located on Mill Street in downtown Georgiana, AL, just behind city hall. It was the first house on the right after you passed city hall going east on Mill street. It was a large wooden one story house with a shop in the backyard and a cottage next door that was used as a rental house. L.E. Platt inherited it from his father W.R. Platt and lived there until his death in 1976. Willie Platt lived there until she was unable to live by herself and entered the nursing home in Prattville, AL. L.E. Platt, Jr. sold the house to the city of Georgiana in 1993 and it has become the City Library. It was visited by Gregory, Deborah, Russell, & Tucker Platt on 7/3/97. He later became intersted in ham radios and operated one for many years from his home. From notes in a business ledger belonging to His father, W.R. Platt, he worked with his father in their mercantile business before entering the army (see page 135 in ledger, circa 1913 for first reference I found with his name, indicating he began work with his father.). John Daniel PLATT Sr. was born on Jan 4 1837 in S.C.. Place of birth SC is an estimated guess. He Moved in 1841 from S. C. to AL. He was a Teacher between 1860 and 1870 in MS, AL. Listed in 1870 AL census as "Teacher" He Is listed in in 1870 in Methodist list of ministers. Huntington College Methodist archives He appeared on the census in 1870 in Conecuh county, AL.1 1870 US Census of Conecuh Co, AL, from Ala. State Archives Reference Room, Transcribed & Indexed, page 124, #246, in Beat 4, Evergreen. Platt, John D., age 32, M, W, Teacher, born SC, school Eleanor (wife Mary Ellen Fulton), age 24, F, KH (house keeper), born Miss. Robert B., age 8, born Miss. John D., (Jr.), age 6, born Miss. Joseph H., age 3, born Miss. Elizabeth, age 1, born Tex. This is consistent with the information we had to this point, but it does document that the John D. Platt family was living in Conecuh County, AL by 1870. Reserached by Greg Platt, 7/8/98 He was a Methodist Minister between 1873 and 1877 in Conecuh county. The Huntington College ARchives in Montgomery, AL contain records of the Methodist ministers who have served in the Ala.-West Florida Conference. John Daniel Platt is listed in this record as J.D. Platt. The record shows that he was accepted into the Methodist Protestant Church as a minister in 1873 for the Greenville, AL and Conecuh County Ala. circuit. I would interpret this to mean that he was a circuit riding preacher. This would mean that he could have preached in a number of the Methodist churches in the area. The record also states that he was "stricken from the roll in 1877 and withdrew without a certificate." The librarian was not able to offer a definition for what this meant. However, based on the letters of Bessie Platt Maramon concerning him, there are two possibilities. In one of her letters she writes that he switched form the Methodist to Baptist churches because his daughter was expelled from the church for dancing! There is also another story that he became convince that immersion was the only correct mode for baptism and switched to Baptist. The truth is probably somewhere in between! As of Aug. 1997, I have not been able to find any documentation of his serving as a Baptist minister. I contacted a member of the church where he is buried, but he said records for this period were incomplete. Although, a plate on the church said it was started in the 1830's. I will continue to search, but Baptist polity and the lack of a central body that assigned ministers may make it difficult. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Conecuh county, AL. Beat No. 10, Conecuh Co, AL, June 1880, #138. He was buried in 1901 in Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetary, Owassa, AL. Take I-65 South from Prattville to the Owassa, AL exit (between Georgiana & Evergreen). Take a left of the exit ramp onto Conecuh County Road 29 East and go until you come to the first stop sign (about a mile). Turn left at the stop sign and the church is on the right just after you turn. Olive Branch Baptist Church was organized in 1821. A marker on the sanctuary gives this date and that it was reorganized in 1970 and the present brick building was built (1997). The cemetary is to the left of the church building. The Platt plot is in the middle of the cemetary and is surrounded by a low concrete wall. As you enter the plot, the first grave on the right is Joe H. Platt, the second is Ellen Fulton Platt, the third is Rev. John Daniel Platt, Sr., and the fourth is Berty Platt. The first on the left (which starts opposite the grave of John Daniel Platt) is Edmon Platt. After Edmon's grave are three smaller markers of infants. (Two un-named babies who only lived a few days and one for S.A. Platt from 1871-77) I take these to be three previously unknown children of John Daniel & Ellen F. Platt, as there are no other relatives buried in the plot. The rest of the plot is empty, with enough room for at least 8 more graves. The markers are all just a concrete slab with the names engraved in the concrete. Weathering has made them difficult to read. At the time we visited the site in July 1997, it was well-maintained. This is a moderate size church cemetary, with an estimated 150 graves. At the time of our visit, there was no one around to ask questions. Photos of the graves would not show anything, as the names are only readable upon close inspection. The site was viewed on 7/3/97 by Gregory, Deborah, Russell, & Tucker Platt. He died on Sep 5 1901 in Owassa, AL. He was married to Mary Eleanor Frost FULTON between 1860 and 1865. 9. Mary Eleanor Frost FULTON was born in 1842. Grave marker has etched into slab "lived 5 days" He (or she) was buried in 1892 in Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetary, Owassa, AL. Buried in family plot at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Owassa, AL, fourth grave on the left. The only info available is from this grave marker. The letters "J.D. & A or F P" are etched on the marker. The "J.D." is presumably John Daniel Platt , but the next letters are more difficult to read. An "A" would not fit any known person. time and possible accidental marking during upkeep or cleaning mayhave distored these letters. There are no other relatives buried in the family plot and the three children buried there had no known children. Ellen Platt would have been 50 years old in 1892, so it is possible, although unlikely that this is their child. I decided to list the child here for lack of another place. 10. There could be 4 more born after Amanda in 1870 & before Clarence in 1880. (Per Tony Powell) He died between 1900 and 1910 in Butler Co., AL. There is a difference of opinion on the spelling of his name: An old family record has it spelled "Brackston", but some other records have it "Blackston". In a time when spelling wasn't very good, there may have been variations of a name. He was married to Amanda BROOKS on Jun 12 1865 in Butler Co., AL. Date per research by Tony Powell 13. This has to be a different child from the Caleb B. Jr. listed in the accounts at Boggins Store. He is probably a son by Caleb Sr.'s second wife. There is some question about her name: whether this is one person with a first & middle name or whether this is two people. Since Rachael cannot be found on any census record in NC or AL, I am taking the position that this is ONE person. Isaac LEE and Rachael Polly FAIL had the following children: 15 i. Elizabeth H. LEE. ii. Lucinda LEE was born in 1834 in Johnston County, NC. per 1850 Butler Co. Census She died about 1862 in Butler Co., AL. iii. Nicholas LEE was born in 1836 in Butler Co., AL. iv. Daniel PLATT3 was born on Dec 15 1782 in Georgetown District, SC. He Is listed in in 1804 in administrator of estate, SC. Listed in SC Magazine of Ancestral Research Vol IX R929.3757So872 pg. 78 as administrator for the estate of John Baxter in 1804. Listed as having a wife , 4 sons, & 1 daughter. He appeared on the census in 1830 in Marion County, SC. Listed as having a wife, 6 sons & 2 daughters. Only 1 son is "5 years or less" & one daughter is "5 years or less". This leads to speculation that at least 5 sons & 1 daughter were from his first marriage to Martha Watson & possibly 8. He was buried in 1840 in Deer-Platt Cemetary, Marion Co., SC. He died on Feb 13 1840 in Marion District, SC. He was a Farmer. Marion County SC Probate Records Vol 2, call no 975.7U91.p13. roll #638, Daniel Platt. He was married to Martha WATSON (BASS) on Feb 2 1809 in Marion County, SC. Research by Bill Stewart shows possible second wife of Daniel Platt; Mary Lane or BAss. further research is needed. 33. Martha WATSON (BASS) was born on Sep 23 1793 in Marion County, SC. She was buried in Mar 1826 in Deer-Platt Cemetary, Marion Co., SC. She died on Mar 20 1826 in Marion County, SC. Based on probate records from Marion County, SC, Daniel Platt married Mary Lane in about 1826, leading to the speculations that martha Watson had died before this time. Our family had only preserved Martha's name because our direct descendent Robert BAxter Platt is descended from her. Somehow, the first name "Mary" had gotten mixed in with martha. Closer examination of the letters of Bessie Platt Maramon & her daughter Shirley do not show "Mary" linked to Martha, but do NOT mention her at all. Did the family not approve of Daniel Platt's second wife? We may never know. See info attached to Mary Lane. **Date of death conincides with date of birth of 8 child James Platt, 3/30/1826, probably she died in or as a result of childbirth.**** Could she also have been a Bass? Marion Co. SC court records show settlement of Mrs. Martha BAss's estate in Nov. 1820 to Daniel Platt & wife. Possibly Martha Bass was widowed and remarried a Bass, which would leave her daughter Martha with the Watson name.? Reserach with Yvone Stewart contineus, 6/98.
