J. W. Joyner's book, A History of the Baptists in Butler County ( 1819-1957). Surnames have been capitolized for easier visualization. Mildred Stinson Brown Gatesville, Texas ------------------------------------ GARLAND BAPTIST CHURCH The church was organized on September 13th, 1862. Pitt S. MILNER and Andrew JAY was presbytery in charge. The charter members were: Thomas ANTHONY, Sarah ANTHONY, Sophia SHIPP, Jane VINN, Thomas BENNETT, Prudence BENNETT, Mary Ann ANTHONY, Nancy DUNHAM, N. J. STINSON, Mary STINSON, John MYRES, Martha MYRES, Jackson CHANCELLOR, and Francis CHANCELLOR. We have no record of early pastors. The records begin with W. A. THARP, R. T. McLEOD, F. M. FLETCHER, W. T. DAVIDSON, J. W. JOYNER, M. I. McLEOD, J. B. BYRD, W. W. LEVERITT, H. S. McMILLAN, G. C. SMITH, J. A. FORTNER, Illus [illus] HALFORD, J. O. DAILY, J. H. COUNTRYMAN, and the present pastor is Nez SELLERS. This church has a Sunday School and W. M. U., and cooperates in all of the work of the Association. The church is located in the town of Garland, on the the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in the sourthern part of the county. The original name of the church was "Mt. Carmel." and when organized ws located about one mile north of the present location where Garland Grave Yard is located. Garland Church furnished the pianist for the Association, and also the choristers for two years, in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. Claiborn JOYNER. Mrs. J. H. COUNTRYMAN also acted as pianist for the Association, and is a member of this church.
