Roads - Butler Co., AL The following is a partial list of overseers for the roads in Butler County during the year 1853. After the Butler County Courthouse burned on April 12, 1853, Comissioners had to re-establish the roads in the county. Commissioners at the time were Young LEE, 47 (W-SW); John D. BONE, 30 (E-SW); George S. PEAGLER, 46 (w); Augustus . GAFFORD, 33 (N-NE). 1. The Old Stage Road, first grade, ran from Greenville to the Lowndes County line. Overseers were: David W. GAFFORD from the 4-mile post; Archibald FULLER to Hall's Creek; Seth MERCER from Hall's Creek to L. W. FLINN's; Larkin HAMMONDS from Flinn's to the Lowndes County Line. 2. The Hayneville Road, second grade, ran NNW to the Lowndes County Line. Overseers were: Young L. COWART from Greenville to Samuel PAYNE's; King L. HARRISON ran from Payne's to William F. HARTLEY's; Wallace MARTIN from Hartley's to the County Line. 3. The Fort Dale Road, second grade. Overssers were Uriah HEATON running from Greenville to Fort Dale; Samuel F. FARROR from Fort Dale to W. P. HARTLEY's. 4. The Cahaba Road, second grade, run to the Lowndes County Line. Overseers included Alexander BROWN, from the road forks near William BURNETT's old homeplace to the crossroads on Cahaba road; James THIGPEN run from the crossroads to the county line. 5. Portland Road, second grade. Overseers were: James M. GAFFORD, for the road fork near Jesse STALLINGS old homeplace to Poplar Springs on Portland Road; G. W. L. BROWN ran from Poplar Springs to the township line between 10 and 11 on Portland Road, then Portland Road to the Wilcox County Line. 6. Manningham Road, second grade. Overseers were: William THIGPEN, from Manningham by way of the Lebanon Bucket Factory to the Cahaba Road; Walter R. CRENSHAW, from Manningham to 16th section bridge on Cedar Creek; Calvin POOLE from the bridge to the Lowndes County Line. (Note: This road may also have been called Centerport Road and the Bucket Factory Road.) 7. Ridgeville Road, second grade. Overseers were: T. A. WOMACK from Gregory's to Thomas HAYES' on Ridgeville Road; Franklin RUTHERFORD, for Hayes' place to county line on Centerport Road (see previous note); Jesse M. WOOTEN, from crossroads near T. C. CRENSHAW's on Ridgeville Road to Monterey; Wiley T. WATTS, from Monterey to the county line near Friendship Church. 8. Canton Road, second grade. Overseers included: John HOWELL, from township line between 10 and 11 to PIESTER's on Canton Road; Lafayette TRAWICK from Ridgeville road to PIESTER's on road leading to the Camden Road; and Joshua GREEN from PIESTER's the county line on Canton Road. 9. The Old State Road to Stockton, first grade, ran from Greenville to the county lines of Conecuh and Monroe Counties. Overseers included: Samuel OLIVER, Jr. from Greenville to the 4-mile post; Daniel H. CHEATHAM, continuing on to John BUCKALEW's; George W. VICKERY, from BUCKALEW's to G. VICKERY's old home place; Wiley PHILLIPS, from VICKERY's to the county line on Stockton Road. 10.Breastwork Church Road, leading from William CHARTER's near Pine Barren Creek past Breastwork Church to Monterey Road near Wiley T. WATTS. 11. Carter's Lane Road. Overseers were: William R. DAWSON from the forks of the road near John BUCKALEW;s to Long Branch on the road leading thru William CARTER's lane; Augustus WATTS, from Long Branch to William CARTER's lane. 12. Butler Springs Road. second grade. Overseers: John MURPHY, from the race track by way of Butler Springs to the Federal Road. (Note: Federal Road was also called Stage Road.) 13. New Monterey Road, second grade, ran from the forks of the road about 1 mile from Daniel H. CHEATHAM's and ended at or near Richard RINGGOLD's. 14. Sparta Road, second grade, ran from the forks of the road near DUNKLIN's Tan Yard, by way of Nathan BRANFORD's and ended at the Conecuh County Line. Overseers were: Sanford RHODES, from Greenville to the forks of the road on the westside of Evans Mill Creek; John BURK, from Mill Creek to Big Rocky Creek; Arthur PARKER, from Big Rocky Creek to Panther Creek; John McPHERSON, from Panther Creek to Edwin SMITH's shop; Hosea S. PERSLAR, from Smith's shop to the county line. 15. Claiborne Road, second grade, leaving Sparta Road at the Widow BLACK's (prob. Mary Ann Black) by way of Young LEE's Store and ending at the Conecuh County Line. Overseers were: James M. BLACK, from the forks of the road near Widow BLACK's to Young LEE's Store; Leander FULLER, from Lee's Store to the county line. 16. Road leaving Stockton Road, second grade, by way of William BLACKMON's to thecounty line of Conecuh near Mastin DEAN's. Overseers: Tomas Mastin DEAN from the Federal Road by way of DEAN's to the county line. 17. Old Sparta Road, second grade, extending from Greenville to Sparta by way of South Butler Post Office, ending at the 23-mile post. Overseers were: Daniel L. SMITH, to 5-mile post on Sparta Road; John BANISTER, from 5 mile post to 10-mile post on Old Sparta Road; Calvin ARANT, from 10-mile post to 16-mile post; Eli HUDSON, from 16-mile post to the 23-mile post on Old Sparta Road. 18. Mastin Bridge Road, second grade, leaving Old Sparta Road near 10-mile post and extending to 19-mile post on the Montezuma Road. 19. Montezuma Road, second grade, running from Greenville to Montezuma, beginning near the 1-mile post by way of Middleton (a community in southeast Butler Co.) to the Covington County Line. Overseers: Albert DEMING, from the crossroad near 8-mile post to William MERCER's on Old Montezuma Road; William LANGFORD, running from MERCER's to Pensacola Trail on Montezuma Road; T. G. HUGHES, from Pensacola Trail to Middleton on Montezuma Road; S. J. FEAGIN, from Middleton to the Covington County Line. 20. Old Monticello Road, second grade, ran from Montezuma Road at 8-mile post by way of Thomas S. KETTLER's and ending at Pike County Line. Overseers: Thomas NEWTON, running from the 6-mile post to the center of COOK's Bridge at Pigeon Creek; Paschal CHILDERS, running from John KETTLER's to Little Patsaliga on the Monticello Road; George W. STAGGERS from Little Patsaliga to the bridge on Big Patsaliga; Robert B. SMYTH, Jr. from Burnt Meeting House on Monticello Road to William WREN's on Brunson's Ferry Road; Peter P. ROACH from WREN's to Brunson's Ferry on Big Patsaliga. 21. Upper Troy Road, second grade, running from the Public Square of Greenville to Pike County Line at WYROSDICK's. Overseers: Stephen M. WRIGHT, from Stage Road nead the Poor House to the center of Pigeon Creek on Troy Road by way of Payne's Mill; Augustus HARRISON, from the center of Pigeon Creek to the branch at Francis DANIEL's old homeplace on Troy Road; Jackson DANIEL, from Daniel's to Little Patsaliga on Troy Road; Arnold KENT, from Little Patsaliga to Pond Creek on Troy Road; Levi JONES from Pond Creek to Big Patsaliga on Troy Road; John BALL from James LOWERY's Gin to the county line. 22. Harrison's Bridge Road, second grade. Overseers: Robert R. WRIGHT, running from west end of WRIGHT and PAYNE lane to the center of Harrison's Bridge on Pigeon Creek; Davis B. WREN from Harrison's Bridge to John KETTLER's on Harrison Bridge Road. (Note: Harrison's Bridge Road intersected the Old Monticello Road near John KETTLER's.) 23. Holland's Ferry Road, second grade, ran from the county line near John EVERAGE's old homeplace by way of Varnell REEVES' homeplace, then by way of John KETTLER's, on by way of John GABLES, and ending at Holland's Ferry on Big Patsaliga. 24. Rocky Mount Road, running from Millville to the Lowndes County Line. 25. Road from Brunson's Ferry on Big Patsaliga to the Monticelloa Road at the Burnt Meeting House. 26. Road from Troy Road, passing by McKENZIE's to the Stage Road near G. CHEATHAM's. 27. Merriweather Road, running from Stage Road at the brance near 4-mile post by way of John McPPHERSON's and ending at the Lowdnes County Line. Overseers were: Samuel KILLOUGH, passing along Stage Road at the branch of Pigeon Creen on the Merriweather Road; William J. ANDRESS, from Pigeon Creek to Lowndes County Line on Merriweather Road; Elias G. McKENZIE, from Troy Road to Old Stage Road near G. CHEATHAM's on the road that crosses from the Tory Road to the State Road. Men in charge of the road in the eastern part of Butler County included: Washington BELL, Coleman POWELL, William GREATHOUSE, Daniel CLANCY, Jr., John COWART and William R. STRINGER.
