Hannah [Taylor] Pickens was on the 1883 list of pensioners Certificate #15,147, residence, Greenville, Butler County, AL Document #16,469, Oct 24, 1878, Rolls of Capt. William Robertson's Co., of S.C. Militia states that John C. Pickens served from Feb. 4, 1815 to March 19,1815. He was paid for one month and fifteen days service. THE STATE OF ALABAMA } On this 9th day of May A.D. 1855 appeared BUTLER COUNTY }before E. H. Pickens, Circuit Court Clerk, Hannah Pickens, aged about 60 years, a resident of Butler County, Alabama, who declares she is the widow of John C. Pickens deceased; that she has heard her husband in his lifetime speak of having been in the army but does not know the fact from her own knowledge. She further states that she was married to the said John C. Pickens in Butler County, State of Alabama on the 9th day of February 1832 by one John C. Ley, a Justice of the Peace, and that her name before her said marriage was Hannah Taylor, that her said husband died in Butler County, Alabama on the 13 day of April A.D. 1845, and that she is now a widow. Sher further decalres that she has heretofore made application for bount land under the act of Sept. 28, 1850 and obtained a land warrant for 40 acres No. 18,639 which she has legally disposed of and it cannot now be returned. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty lnd to which she may be entitled under act of Mar. 3, 1855. Hannah [her X mark] Pickens We, William Tillery & John R. Tillery, residents of Butler Co., Ala., declare that they saw Hannah sign -------------------------------------------- Copy of the family record of the marriage of John C. Pickens & Hannah Taylor "John C. Pickens & Hannah Taylor were married 9th February 1832". William Tiller & John R. Tillery declare that the above is a correct copy of the family record of the marriage of John C. Pickens and Hannah Taylor, that they were acquainted with said John C. Pickens in his lifetime, that he is now dead, that he died in the County of Butler, State of Ala., that his widow never married after his death, that she is living and is a widow. William Tillery John R. Tillery ------------------------------------------------- THE STATE OF ALABAMA } On this 10th day of May A.D. 1855 BUTLER COUNTY }before E. H. Pickens, Circuit Court Clerk, Richard Ringgold aged seventy-five years, a resident of Butler County, Ala., declares he was acquainted with John C. Pickens of said Co., & State in his lifetime, that the said John C. Pickens was in the army during the War of 1812, that he volunteered on 18 day of June, 1812, that he volunteered in the State of South Carolina, Abbeville District and belonged to a company commanded by Capt. William Robeson in the regiment commanded by Col. Austin; that affiant was in teh same company and was well acquainted with the said John C. Pickens, that he & the said Pickens volunteered sometime before being called into actual service & was called into actual service sometime at the time the news of peace having been made; that he the said John C. Pickens served in said war fourteen days adn was honorable discahrged at Edgefield Courth House in the State of South Carolina. That the affiant was acquainted with the said John C. Pickens in teh state of Alabama Butler County, that he is now dead. Richard Ringgold --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Department of Interior, Pension Office Sept. 3, 1878 You are respectfully requested to furnish evidence of the enrollment muster, service, duty and discharge or death of John C. Pickens who is alleged to have been enrolled at Abbeville, S.C. on -- day of -- 1812 in Capt. Wm. Robeson's Co. of Col. Austins's Regiment of S. C. Mil. and to have been discharged at Edgefield C H, S. C. 1815. The State of Alabama - Butler County. On this -- day of Sept. 1878 personally came A. McKellar aged 74 years, who being duly sworn according to law deposed and says that he came to Butler Co., Ala., in the year 1829 and has so resided since; that after he became a citizen as stated he married a Miss Caldwell whose sister as he states on family repute was the first wife of the late John C. Pickens of Butler Co., Ala., who died prior to deponent's residence in said county; the date of said death he can't state and he states the fact as received in the family and community without doubt or question. The said John C. Pickens susequently married a Miss Taylor who still resides as his widow in Butler Co., Ala. The legal right of said Pickens to marry his second wife has never been doubted or questioned. Deponent has no interest in this statement. His P. O. address is Greenville, Ala. A. McKellar -------------------------------------- Alos at the same itme personally came A. M. Black, ages 57 years, a resident of said state and county who being duly sworn, deposes and says that he is the son of a sister of the late John C. Pickens, that his said uncle married Miss Caldwell who died when the deponent was a very small boy living in the same vicinity; that he well remebers the second marriage of his said uncle, whose widow is now living in Butler Co; that the first wife was dead prio to the second marriage of his said uncle and the legality of both of said marriages had never been doubted or questioned in the family & community. Deponent had no interest in this statement and his P.O. address is Greenville, Ala. A. M. Black ----------------------------------------------- I add as a part of my evident that my uncle married for his wife a Miss Hannah Taylor, who is now his widow. A. M. Black ---------------------------------------------- WAR OF 1812 CLAIM OF WIDOW FOR SERVICE PENSION State of Alabama County of Butler. On this 23rd day of March 1878 before Judge of Probate, came Hannah Pickens, ages 84 years, a resident of Butler Co., Ala. who swears she is the widow of John C. Pickens deceased, who service in the War of 1812-1815; enlisted at Abbeville C. H., S C and served 14 days. Honorable discharge, 1814. She was married to John C. Pickens in Butler Co., Ala. on 9th Feby 1832; that her name before was Taylor; her husband had a former wife Sarah, who died before our marriage. John C. Pickens died in Butler Co., Ala. on 13 April 1845; the following have been places of residence since discharge from the army: So. Ca, Abbeville and Butler Co., Ala. from about 1818. She has heretofore made no application for pension, but received a land warrant for 160 acres about 1856, number not remembered. Witness Hannah [her X mark] Pickens John A Pickens F. M. Black John A. Pickens, aged 44, Greenville, Ala. and F. M. Black, 50, Greenville, Ala. certify they have known Hannah Pickens for 40 and 40 yrs respectfully. They knew John C. & Hannah Pickens for the above time to his death as man & wife, knew her as his widow now. This claimant obtained a Land Warrant about 1856 for her deceased husband's ervice by the aid of his brother, now dead who knew of the service.
