Williams personal records Author: Larry G. Williams Ervin Foster Rice first appears in Calhoun County for his wedding to Louisa Jane King on 28 December 1851. He was born in north Carolina but it is not know when he moved to Alabama or if he moved here with his family. Since the King family came from the Spartanburg, SC area it is highly possible that he came from one of the adjoining counties. lWhen the Civil War erupted Ervin and his borhters-in-law went to White Plains and enrolled in Alabama Company K, 48th Infantry Regiment under Captain Moses Lee. Ervin and his family fought in many battles during the war and Ervin was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Mannassas Gap in Virginia. He was filed promoted several times eventually reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant.After the war Ervin and his wife lived in nearby Cherokee County in the Estes Crossroads area. Thier children were: henry Morgan, Sarah E., Margarett Ann Louisa, Mary H. William Robert, Penelope Jane, Ida F., James Harris and Joseph M. The RICe family lived near the family of Thomas COMBS who settled here from Kentucky and was married to Caterina "Rena". Henry Morgan RiceRice married Sarah E. Combs on 18 Sep 1879 and they had the following children: James Luther, William Foster, Draper Lafayette, Oliver "Ike", Pluma Caroline, Ola Lorene, Frederick Hershel, Vester Idella and Beeson Hill. Henry's wife died on 26 December 1908 in Jackson County Alabama where the Rice family had moved and she is buried at Goosepond Presbyterian Cemetery in Jackson County. Henry remarried to Mary Belle Michaels from Langston, Jackson, Alabama dnd they had three children: Kathryn Jane, Doris Louise and John Henry. The only child of Ervin Foster Rice to have remained in Cherokee County was Sarah E. "Sally" and she married Daniel WORSHAM and they had two children: Ada & Louisa L. "Lou". Another child of Ervin married one of the Combs boys. Mary H. RICE who married George Washington COMBS. It is not know about the whereabouts of the other members of the Thomas COMBS family. The Rice families moved to Jackson County Alabama later on and this is where they settled. Many members of the RICE and COMBS families live in Jackson County or surrounding areas.
