June 4, 1914 Mrs. James Orr Church St. Oxford, Ala Thursday My dear Cootie (Stella Roberts Orr) The last time I had the extreme pleasure of looking upon your leaving countenance it was so fluently ___ in tears that you looked very unnatural but I am anxious to the latest of my anxiety to know that you are giggling once more. Altho I am not present to help nurse you I hope your tickle box will not get out of commission for you know some day in the bright and glorious future I am going to make a trip up about Oxford and fully expect to come around to see you - there I may have some interesting tales to tell of my travels in this unexplored country so prepare to pucker. If you and Mrs. Roberts (Eliza Hornbuckle Roberts) have a much fun as me and Mrs. Mellon (Lila Roberts Mellon) you sho' do have lots. We work all of the time and it is making us fat. We haven't gotten everything straight yet but you ought to see the part we have, you can see yourself in our floors but that is due to the decent mop we bought ourselves. The new stores haven't gotten straightened out yet and it is a proposition to keep house without anything. Just between you and me and the gate post - when I start to keeping house I am going to get a one room house. I've got my eye on an old bachelor down here and this child is figurating around to catch that old booger. He don't know we have caught on to his tricks but he is trying to catch me to. We know because he hangs around us something awful and further more he thought Foster have to deliver. Now isn't that sufficient proof? Why he is just dead in love with me. And old sweet Amos! You know that rascal walked home with me and we sat out on the porch side by each yesterday afternoon and had some fun. I was just on the point of telling him that "I do love romance" when I realized that he is kinder deaf and everybody would hear me. If I stay down here much longer Oscar just as well sue for a divorce. Mrs. Mellon (Lila) is having some fun fixing her curtains. They are about two or three inches too short and she is putting pieces on the top. These windows are miles long. Are you still doing society? Dadeville is without a doubt the gayest place on the globe. We have more parties and the sweetest receptions! They are beginning to play that game - 42 - down here and only yesterday I saw a checker board down town. You remember some one told us we would hardly get in the house before people started to coming to see us? That is exactly the way they do in this town. Why, we have already had two callers and they are both our next door neighbors. Every day we dress up in some of our swell outfits and go to town for the mail. It's full of fun. There is a tennis court right in front of our residence so you see the belles and beaux of this village are great believers in taking lots of exercise. We came pretty near having a storm last night and my old bachelor's house was struck by lighting. Foster and Amos were working so Lila and I were by ourselves and our knees got weak several times. However we have recovered finely. Mrs. Orr, we do thank you so much for the package your sent us. It was lovely of you to send it and I am sure we will be handsome when we get rigged up. Mama's letter is the only real news I have gotten and I am tired of this foolishness. We were all tickled pop-eyed to hear from her so some of the rest of you can throw a little ink down this way. It's almost time for me to go after the mail and I sho' do want some letters. We are perfect curiosity to these folks and they look at us like we might be xmas trees. If they are not more careful I will do them like old Doc Yac - I'll hi them so hard their shirt tails will roll clear up their backs. Must stop and dress. Write soon Love from all of us dearly, Roberta (Roberta Aurelia Roberts) File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/calhoun/history/letters/letterju344gms.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 4.6 Kb
