(2) Mellon Bridge was 100 feet long and ten feet wide and high. It was built around the turn of the century by Horace King, an ex-slave who had learned bridge building from his master, John Goodwin. (3) The Alabama Historical Commission said of the bridge: "because of its architecture, Mellon Bridge is a valuable heritage structure and certainly should be preserved. (4) Mellon Bridge, nestled in the beautiful wooded area east of Oxford, attracted the attention of local Jaycees who hoped to restore the covered bridge and build a park around it. (5) Mellon Bridge burned on October 3, 1970.
