Feb 1, 1921, and d. Feb 15, 1942. F2, USN, WWII, USN Service Number 02723638, enlisted USNavy July 1940. After Naval Recruit Training School at Norfolk Va., he transferred to the South Pacific; presumed lost with all hands onboard the USS Shark (I) SS-174, East of Menado, Celebes, Makassar Strait; Awarded the Purple Heart Medal. James Edward Johnston was born in Jacksonville Calhoun County Alabama. SMN F2 JEJohnston, ACTIVITY DURING WWII: Fireman Second Class. Killed-In-Action onboard USS SHARK SS-174 Feb 11, 1942. The Shark reported to base at SOERABAJA that she had been depth-charged ten miles off TIFORE ISLAND and had failed to sink a Japanese ship during a torpedo attack. Five days later, she reported chasing an empty cargo ship headed northwest. No further messages were received. On Feb 8, 1942, she was told to proceed to MAKASSAR STRAIT and later was told to report information. Nothing was heard, and on March 7, 1942 the SHARK was reported as presumed lost, the victim of unknown causes. No known survivors.
