Nestled down at the foot of the verdant hills surrounding Choccolocco Valley are 45 acres of sandy grain loam upon which are planted row upon row of trees bearing as luscious red apples as will be found in this Southland. The ranch thrives under the name of "Mellon's Orchard", and bears such an air of prosperity as would convince the most doubting Alabama agrarian that fruit can be raised on a paying commercial basis in this state. This orchard, started 28 years ago (1896) by W.E. Mellon, produces from 7,000 to 11,000 bushels of apples each year, and practically has a monopoly of the apple trade of Jacksonville, Sylacauga, Gadsden, Attalla, Talladega, Alexnader City and Anniston.
