Inside of it a note bears this message "Brought in 1820 from South Carolina in a covered wagon by Grandfather Kirksey." The clock is just one of many interesting items to be seen at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Roberts. In fact, a large den is devoted almost entirely to articles belonging to earlier members of their families. For instance, there is the little red wheelbarrow made completely of wood, even the wheel, which was a favorite with Mr. Roberts' late father, who held the same job for 52 years as buyer for Anniston Hardware Company. Beams with Pride Jimmy Roberts, a retired disabled World War II veteran, beams with pride as he talks about his family. " My grandfather came to Oxford in 1862 from Cleburne County. The Roberts family has been a part of Oxford for a hundred years," he proudly said. Daisy Roberts, his wife, is a popular member of the faculty of Oxford Elementary School where she has taught for eight years. A very gracious lady she make any visitor feel welcome from the moment they enter her door. She likes to display the gifts she and her husband have received from their many friends, all with some special significance. There was a pearlized pitcher which was given to them by a couple who have been married for 70 years. The pitcher was one of their wedding gifts. Other Objects Fascinate In the lovely den which extends completely across the back of the house one can see an old coal bin, black with very artistic legs; a spool chest believed to be around 50 or 60 years old; one of those old victrolas with a hand crank; a table with large legs about six inches in diameter which was once used by Mrs. Roberts' mother; a glazed pottery teapot made at Oxford Tile and Pottery Shop somewhere around 1897; and a heavy black iron dutch oven, kettle and skillet. Mr. Roberts discovered in his father's belongings around 600 novelty tobacco tags which used to be attached to each bag of tobacco sold. His father had collected them as a hobby. After sorting them, he mounted 400 of the tags in a large frame. Indian Paintings Featured Also on the den walls are two frames containing mounted arrowhead and pieces of pottery. On either side of the fireplace hand an Indian painting. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, who were married in 1955, do not have any children, but they have a large white cat, named Mike, which is a constant companion. He often goes on trips with the couple, traveling in his own cage which, according to Mrs. Roberts, has wall-to-wall carpeting.
