They were Roberta Mellon, who retired after 23 years with the government and Harriet Lacy and Betty Armstrong who transferred to Fort MacArthur, California. Mrs. Mellon began her civil service career in 1918 as a stenographer in the Transportation Office at "Camp" McClellan. She worked there only a year and a half when she moved to Texas, got married and returned to Anniston. On the fifth of December 1933, Roberta returned to civil service at "Camp" McClellan where she worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the district surgeon's office. She has not had a break in service since. In 1941 Roberta was transferred to East Point, Ga., but she returned in 1942 and began working in the Finance Office at Fort McClellan. Roberta came to the Anniston Ordnance Depot in 1947 and went to work in t he Fiscal Office in the Commercial Voucher Branch. She has worked in this section ever since, and has been the certifying officer for commercial vouchers for 5 years. When asked why she had continued her work so long, Roberta stated that every minute had been a pleasure. "My job has always been pleasant," she went on to say, "It has never been any trouble or hardship, and I have really enjoyed the people I associated with." Roberts's hobby is flowers. She has a hot house and boast 30 orchid plants. "I hope to be able to work on a commercial basis after I retire," she comments. "So far, it has only been a hobby." Mr. Mellon is retired, too. He is known over Oxford for the famous "Mellon" apples that he used to raise and the delicious apple cider he sold every summer. "We plan to just take off --- head West," mused Roberta, "We have no destination in mind or any special date to return. We are just going to go until we get tired." On Friday all of the employees of the Finance and Accounting Office gave Roberta a farewell party at the Officer's Club. She was presented with lots of gifts from all of her friends. About her retirement, Mrs. Mellon states, "I feel just like I am leaving my family and children," And about Mrs. Mellon, her co-workers agree, " She has been a guardian angel to all of us, teaching us our jobs, and seeing after us. She has been just as concerned with our personal affairs as our jobs and we sure will miss her."
