"I live not in myself, but I become a portion of that around me," said Byron; and this may be repeated in reference to Mr. Crook, for he had lived so long in Anniston and had loved and been loved so dearly by its people that he certainly was an integral part of this community. Mr. Crook was the dean of the insurance men of Anniston. He knew his business thoroughly and his opinions were respected throughout the South. On more than one occasion he was instrumental in preventing an increase of rates here and his service to the community in that respect was conspicuous. But it was not merely in his chosen field that he served Anniston. He was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and at all times he gave liberally of his time and money to promote the community. Few men in Anniston knew the history of this section better than did Mr. Crook. His memory was remarkable and when any one was in doubt about the various ramifications of families or events one could always get accurate information from him. But it is the personality of the man that will be missed the most. His geniality made him a rare companion and his loyalty made him a friend that would stick closer than a brother. In his home life he was gentle and affectionate, radiating sunshine and dispensing hospitality in the true old Southern style up to the very day of his last illness. He will be greatly missed.
