Ed had lost his hearing at 4 years of age due to Typhoid fever. Fannie was born deaf. They meet at the "Alabama School for the Deaf" about Sept. 1888. They were married July 1, 1903 in Clahoun Co., Al and raised eight children. =============================================== THE ANNISTON STAR Monday August 20, 1928 Front Page ---------------------- DEAF AND DUMB MAN IS KILLED BY TRAIN HERE ---------------------- ED BENNETT Meets Death Walking Down Southern Track This Morning ---------------------- ENGINEER HOWELL SOUNDS WHISTLE ----------------------- HEAD IS FRACTURED FROM LEFT EYE TO BASE OF HEAD; FREIGHT UNABLE TO STOP IN TIME TO SAVE MAN ----------------------- Ed Bennett, 59, deaf and dumb man, was instantly killed by an East bound Southern freight train Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning when he was struck while walking down the tracks, a few blocks South of Cooper's crossing. According to information gathered by ambulance attendants, the engineer, a Mr. Howell, blew the whistle and tried to stop the train, but was too close to the deaf and dumb man. Mr. Bennett's head was fractured from the left eye to the base of the head, it was said. The engine struck Mr. Bennett in the back of the head, it was believed. Mr. Bennett is survived by his Widow and several children. Mr. Bennett left his home early this morning, but did not say where he was going. Members of his family were wondering today why he was in that section of the city. After the train struck Mr. Bennett it backed up to the Southern station where an Usrsey ambulance met it. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, four sons, John and Henry, of Anniston, Fred and Sam who are in the army; four daughters, Nancy and Bessie, of Birmingham; Ella and Martha, of Anniston. Funeral Arrangements were incomplete today, but will announced later by Usrey, pending advice of relatives. =========================================== THE ANNISTON STAR Wednesday August 22, 1928 Page 6 ---------------------- FINAL RITES HELD FOR VICTIM OF FREIGHT TRAIN ---------------------- Ed Bennett, Mute Who Was Killed Here Monday, Is Buried At Mt. Zion ---------------------- Funeral services for Ed Bennett, 59, deaf and dumb man who was instantly killed Monday morning when hit by a Southern freight train as he was walking down the track near the Anniston Packing company, were held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at Mt Zion church. Rev. Z. R. Carpenter, pastor of Carpenter Memorial church officiated. Interment was made in Mt. Zion cemetery. Usrey was in charge. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, four sons, John and Henry, of Anniston and Fred and Sam who are in the army; four daughters, Nancy and Bessie, of Birmingham; Ella and Martha, of Anniston. The engineer blew the whistle, it was said, and when Mr. Bennett did not move from the track he tried to stop the train but could not avoid hitting the man. Mr. Bennett's skull was fractured.
