A full and appropriate record of such an upright, beautiful, maidenly life as hers, lies not, the INQUIRER is sorry to say, within the circumscribed and peculiar province of this or any newspaper. Miss Caldwell’s best and truest obituary, will be found to exist in the hearts of those who knew her best. This being full appreciated, no attempt is made in these columns to publish more than a few facts, which though well known to most of her friends, will be of interest to those who were not so intimately acquainted with her. About three weeks ago, Miss Caldwell contracted a low fever, which confined her to her bed and which was the cause of her death; but until Sunday evening, her physicians and attendants looked forward to her recovery. On Monday her condition grew rapidly worse; a very serious complication set in, and the doctors pronounced her case a critical one. Every thing in their power was done for her relief by her loving mother and relatives, and the physicians used every means known to them, that presented a chance for recovery; but their efforts were unavailing, and at 9:15, p.m. on Tuesday, she ceased to live. Her death was accompanied by very little pain and took place in the presence of her mother and relatives. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, at the residence of her uncle, M.T. Moody, where Miss Caldwell and her mother had been living, and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.W. Tucker of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. R.T. Bentley; Revs. Sinnott and Brewster were also present. In the course of his remarks, Mr. Tucker spoke very feelingly of the life and character of the deceased, referring to the conduct of her life as a guiding star and shining example to be followed by all. During the services, Mrs. Jone, Mrs. Woodruff, and Messrs. Eubanks and Sharp, sang two appropriate hymns. J.Kibbler Dailey, James C. Wickes, J. Latimer Tatnall, Samuel Brewster, I. Newton Cochran, and W. Iredell Hood acted as pall bearers. The number of people in attendance was very large, and many of them brought floral tributes of respect, to her who in her life exhibited a great fondness of flowers. The pupils of the High School and the members of Miss Caldwell’s Sunday School class, attended the funeral in a body. A number of business houses were closed during the funeral and a universal sadness seemed to be felt everywhere. The feeling of bereavement occasioned throughout the town among all who knew her, eloquently testified to the high esteem in which she was held. She was possessed of many accomplishments and a disposition which won the love of all who knew her. Having joined the Methodist church when she was 15 years old, she was an earnest and efficient worker within its circles. Besides being organist at both the church and Sunday School in which she was very much interested, and the members of which looked up to and loved her, both as teacher and friend. In all her conduct she exhibited that regard for the comfort and interest of others which denotes a very generous character, and the gentle purity and good nature of all her actions left her with no enemies and hosts of friends. She died a full believer in the principles of her faith. The INQUIRER extends its sincere sympathies to Mrs. Caldwell, who is left, by her daughter’s death, both childless, and a widow.
