Hanks That was a sudden call that came on Wednesday night to Luke A. Hanks and summoned to his final account a middle aged, healthy, and vigorous man who had been active in business pursuits and social offices up to almost the last hour. On Wednesday, Mr. Hanks appeared in his usual haunts in perfect health. During the morning he was engaged in his ordinary vocations. In the afternoon, he assisted in the funeral services of a deceased neighbor. Later he was with the happy family circle under his own rooftree. At midnight he was dead. Mr. Hanks was born in Anderson District, S.C., on the 6th of March 1834; but the greater part of his life was spent in this community. He was twice married here. Twice he followed the beloved of his heart to the grave here. Here his children were born. Here he lived and labored among men for something like half a century. He was an honest man, a good citizen, a kind neighbor, a faithful friend. There was no pretence in his life, no affectation, no assumption. He was a plain, unpretending, modest man; content to do his duty in the in the [sic] humble station in which his lot was cast. Perhaps the formula known as the Golden Rule was never in his mind, but its spirit was in his heart, and few have come nearer than he came to living in accordance with it. Death came to him suddenly. He has gone out from among men, and he place that knew him once will know him no more forever. But he will not soon be forgotten, this kindly, genial, good man, who always seemed to love others better than himself and to live for others rather than for himself.
