Coroner T. Flint Gray termed the death a suicide in his report of the investigation. Mellon and Sam McCombs, the coroner reported, had gone to the Pettus home to talk about buying some property. Pettus, McCombs and Lester Ashley were there at the time of death. They told the coroner they were standing under a barn shed and that Mellon walked to a nearby stall and that they heard the report of the pistol. Coroner Gray stated that Mr. Mellon had been in ill health for some time and this was attributed as the cause of his act. Several months ago, Mr. Mellon was hurt in an automobile accident, a vertebra in his neck being fractured. Surviving are his wife, three brothers, R. E. Mellon, W. F. Mellon and S. A. Mellon of Oxford, and two sisters, Mrs. James T. Brittian of Oneonta and Mrs. Groce Hubbard of Mobile. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Usrey.
