Mellon, Sr. of 210 Gray St, Oxford, died late yesterday afternoon at Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. The son of the late William E. and Sarah Mellon who were among the early residents of Oxford, he was a native and lifelong resident of the Oxford ar ea. A retired farmer, for many years he operated a large apple orchard (Mellon Apple Orchard Farm) on Hillabee Creek. For a number of years he was associated with the Swann Chemical Company. He was a former Oxford Councilman and served on the Oxford School Board so me years ago when the schools there were operated municipally. Mr. Mellon was a deacon and former treasurer of the First Baptist Church of Oxford and a member of Oxford Post III, American Legion. Until the past few years he was extremely active in civic and church affairs of Oxford. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Roberta Roberts Mellon; one son; three sisters, Miss Betty Mellon, Mrs. Nell M. Hubbard, and Mrs. Neva Brittian; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at First Baptist Church of Oxford with the Revs. H. E. Cotey and Allen Balch officiating. Burial will be in Oxford Cemetery, Usrey directing. Pallbearers will be nephews, William G. Mellon, James F. Mellon, Baker Wingfield, Harry Embry, Clyde Orr and Rayford B. Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Louis, Dishman, C.H. Burdette, Sr., H. G. (Hemphill) Whiteside, A.H. Powell, W.W. Robertson, Carl Wilson, Robert Cambron, W.C. Minshew, B.A. Adams, Sr., J. H. Harwood, Robert Lamar, Wayne Bennett, D. H. Henderson, Leonard Thomas, M.M. Boyles, H. J. (Howard) Bentley, Jr., and Clayton G. Walker.
