(By John FitzGerald) Oxford, May 27. - (Special) - Gaines Roberts is dead. Stricken with apoplexy early last Saturday morning this well known citizen lingered unconscious until 6:30 o'clock last evening when the end came. As the news of Mr. Roberts' death last night passed from home to home, genuine sorrow was felt and expressed by all those who had known and loved him, for many years. A man of many attainments, honest almost to a fault, Richard Gaines Roberts lived a life of sober uprightness, making his everyday religion, a criterion for others, rejoicing always in being able to pluck a thorn from the paths of his friends, and loving mankind. Ever attentive and mindful of sickness and suffering, Mr. Roberts was truly a neighbor to those about him, and when the darkness of death came to the home of his friends he was always there, and by acts of kindness and love, helped dispel the gloom of sorrow. An admirable trait of his character was his unwavering devotion to his family, coupled with the unpretentious friendship for his acquaintances. He mingled with the rich and the poor alike; he greeted the laborer in overalls with the same warmth bestowed on the man of wealth, children loved him because he was lovable, the meek and lowly loved him for his kindnesses to them, others admired him for his sincerity. Richard Gaines Roberts was born March 30, 1850 near Chulafinee in Cleburne county, removing with his family to Oxford in 1862, to Talladega the year following, and back to Oxford after the war. In early manhood he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Wyatt Hornbuckle, who survives, with five children, Earle B. Roberts, Mrs. James A. Orr and Miss Roberta Roberts, of Oxford; Capt. R. Gowan Roberts, of Talladega, and Mrs. Foster Mellon, of Dadeville. Under the non de plume of "Waverly Johnson" Mr. Roberts was known as a forceful and versatile writer. As a musician he had a wide reputation, and as a Pythian he was without reproach. Following funeral services at the residence, the remains were laid to rest in the Oxford cemetery this afternoon. Mr. Roberts was an active member of Rathbone Lodge No. 68 Knights of Pythias, and this fraternity officiated in the services at the grave. The services were conducted by Rev. L. M. Harris and the other ministers of the town.
