Mrs. Johnson and Miss Roberts operated photography studios next door to one another on Noble Street in Anniston. And Mrs. Johnson pays perhaps the ultimate tribute by referring to Miss Roberts as "my competitor and best friend." "She was quite an addition to the committee. She entertained women at her home and tried to do anything she could to make the fort a more pleasant place to be," Mrs. Whitehead says. "She was a very warm, caring person toward family, friends and neighbors, but never forced herself on anyone. "She also worked with needy people, but never with any fanfare or by calling attention to herself," Mrs. Whitehead says.
