Mellon Sr., son of William Edward Mellon and Sarah Ella Foster Mellon) Source: The Anniston Star, Anniston, Alabama Date: October 9, 1949 Anniston 25 Years Ago October 9, 1924 The Mellon Orchard, east of Oxford, is proof that Calhoun County can become a great-fruit-raising section. Nestled down at the foot of the verdant hills surrounding Choccolocco Valley are 45 acres of sandy grain loam upon which are planted row upon row of trees bearing as luscious red apples as will be found in the Southland. The ranch thrives under the name of "Mellon's Orchard" and bears such an air of prosperity as would convince the most doubting Alabama agrarian that fruit can be raised on a paying commercial basis in this state. This orchard, started 28 years ago (1896) by W.E. Mellon Jr., produces from 7,000 to 11,000 bushels of apples each year, and practically has a monopoly of the apple trade of Jacksonville, Sylacauga, Gadsden, Attalla, Talladega, Alexander City and Anniston.
