The King family settled in Benton(Calhoun) County from South Carolina. Ervin came from North Carolina but it is not know when he or his family settled in Alabama and even which county. Ervin enrolled in Alabama Company K, 48th Infantry Regiment under Captain Moses Lee. Ervin entered into service on 22 April 1865 as a Private. He was field promoted several times eventually reaching the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Ervin served in many battles and was wounded at the 2nd Battle of Mananas Gap(Bull Run) in Virginia. After service Ervin and his wife served as organizers of Nances Creek Baptist Church and eventually left the church. They later moved to Cherokee County or the lines changed (not sure which) but they lived in the area of Estes Crossroads and Gnatville. Ervin and Louisa raised a family there until her death on 25 August 1889. It is not known where she was buried but Ervin moved to jackson County, Alabama later on and eventually remarried. The Rice family lived in Jackson County in the Goosepond area from that point on. Additional Comments: Anyone wishing to correspond in regards to Ervin Foster Rice should contact Larry G.
