Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY (Circa 1832 - ) & Joseph D RICHARDS Thomas Willoughby married Agnes Hays in Clark County, Georgia in January, 1820. The parents of Agnes are not known. After their marriage, Thomas and Agnes followed a popular migration route used by many of the early settlers of the United States. With the the westward movement of the Cherokee and Creek Indians, fertile land in western Georgia and Eastern Alabama became available. Settlers, primarily from Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, populated Western Georgia and Eastern Alabama by the thousands. 1. Robert WILLOUGHBY (1821 - ) 2. Jesse J. WILLOUGHBY (1822 - ) & Nancy B. McLendon (1826 - 10 Sep 1856) 1. Sara Ann Clemantine WILLOUGHBY (1847 - 1874) 2. Thomas J. WILLOUGHBY Thomas is quite likely the first of our line of Willoughbys to have gone to Alabama, brother Ellis is listed in the Chambers County, Alabama census of 1830 and 1849. Another brother, George moved to Loundes County, Alabama and lived there until his death. Thomas and his family are recorded beginning in the 1830 Census of Chambers County Alabama. In the 1840 Chambers County Census, his last name is Thomas Willoby. This spelling of Willoughby was used in earlier times and was a "common mistake made by census takers. It was correctly spelled in the 1850 Census of Chambers County. This census of 1850 shows 2 fewer males in the household of Thomas. His two oldest sons, Robert and Jesse J, no longer live at home. Jesse has married Nancy B McLendon, and Robert is living in the household with them. The census of 1860 in Chambers County reads as follows: Thomas Willoughby 70 Agnes 70 Robert 40 John H 3 Hester Ann 32 Anne Hays 65 It appears that Robert has returned home to live with his parents. Anne Hays is likely the sister of Agnes, who has moved in with them after the death of her parents. Thomas Willoughbys second born child was Jesse J. Willoughby. He was born in 1822 and first married to Nancy McLendon on December 3, 1845. , the daughter of Thomas McLendon, of Chambers County. Jesse and Nancy Willoughby had two Children, Sarah and Thomas J. Sarah Ann Clementine was born in 1847; the birthday of Thomas J. is not known. Jesses wife, Nancy, , died on 10 September, 1856. The will of Nancy Willoughby is probated in Chambers County, Alabama with Jesse J. Willoughby, listed as Administrator, Thomas J. McLendon, witness, and William l. Crayton, Judge. The will was annexed 1 Sept 1856. in 1856, Bond $26.000. Final settlement was made on January 6, 1859. Jesse Willoughby said no property belonging to the Estate of Nancy B Willoughby had come into his hands except the Negro "Marinada" and her 2 children, Charles and Dave. Sara Ann Clemantine Willoughby and Thomas J. Willoughby, her children, both under 21, are her heirs at law. In the State of Arkansas, County of Union, the term of Probate Court in the town of Eldorado, Arkansas, Monday 24 Jan 1859, Jesse J. Willoughby represents he is Father of Sarah Ann C. And Thomas J. Willoughby, minors, under 14 years of age. that he has lately removed from Chambers County , Alabama to Union Co, Ark, bringing with him two minors and that he is the lawful qualified guardian of said minors. . He Prays to be Appointed Guardian of Minors, and on 1 Feb 1859 in Union County Arkansas, he is appointed guardian of Sara Ann and Thomas J. Willoughby. Jesse marries a second time to Marian M McLendon. The date of this marriage is unknown, but it is doubtless before 1860. It is also likely that Marian is a sister of Nancy, his first wife. During the 1800s, upon the death of a spouse, it was not uncommon to marry one of his or her siblings. Jesse J. Willoughby died in Union County Arkansas in 1864. Sara Ann Clemantine Willoughby died in Chambers County Alabama in 1874 at 17 years of age. The death date of Thomas J. Willoughby is not known. 3. Rev. John H WILLOUGHBY (1826 - 1864) & Maria L. They were married in Chambers County Alabama on the 22 November 1853. 5. Martha Jane WILLOUGHBY (1830 - ) & Ephriam J LEE (1823 - ) 1. William J LEE (1853 - ) 2. Nancy LEE (1855 - ) Martha Jane Willoughby was born n Alabama in 1830. Her husband, Ephriam Lee was the son of William and Nancy Lee. According to the 1860 Chambers County Census, both of William parents were born in 1790, in North Carolina. This same census shows the children of Martha and Ephriam to be William and Nancy, ages 7 and 5, respectively. Martha and Ephriam were married by Joel Trammell, JP on 24 June 1851 in Chambers County, Alabama. In 1830, there was a very large number of Lees living in Blount County, Tennessee. Some of them moved to both Chambers and Lowndes Counties in Alabama. My first name of my father, Lee Rhodes Willoughby, very likely was handed down from this family of Lees. 6. Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY (Circa 1832 - ) & Joseph D RICHARDS Elizabeth Willoughby was born in 1832. She married Joseph D. Richards in 1849. She was listed as an heir to the Estate of Rev. John H.
