The last Federal Census available to me at that time was the 1910. For the most part, my research ended there, except for later information in documents and information sent to me by descendants of these families, and, of course, information and documents from my family on our direct line from Susanna (Berryhill) Self. This book includes all sorts of documents that I have copied as the originals, written without corrections as to spelling, wording and punctuation. In a lot of cases, the only spelling of names that I have was from a document, so they may differ from the actual spelling of the name. I believe, but have no proof, that the father of our John Berryhill, Sr., was the Old Alexander Berryhill who was granted 200 acres of land in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 25 April 1767, then moved to the Colony of Georgia and sold this 200-acre grant, as a "Georgia Planter" 13 December 1771, to the Widow Mary Graham. I don't know where Old Alexander Berryhill came from when he went to North Carolina. He doesn't seem to be a part of the family of a John and Mary (Digness) Berryhill, who moved from Pennsylvania to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and settled there about the time Old Alexander Berryhill was in Mecklenburg County. All lines of Berryhill families, however, are of Scottish ancestery. Following is the land grant of Old Alexander Berryhill in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and the sale of this same land after he moved to the Colony of Georgia. Signed Sealed and Delivered in the presence of ALEXANDER BERRYHILL (seal) David Hay John Cathy North Carolina Mecklenburg County To wit Jan'y Term 1772 This is to certify that the Execution of the within Deed was proved in open Court and Recorded in the Clarks(sp) Office according to law Ordered to be registered Robert Harris CC A lexander Berryhill moved to the colony of Georgia sometime between 1767 and 1771 and petitioned for a land grant in St. George Parish, Province of Georgia. He stated in his petition that he had a wife and seven children. I don't know if he received this grant for which he made the petition. Andrew Berryhill was the first of the Berryhills to go to Georgia. I believe that he was the son of old Alexander Berryhill. A single man was allowed a land grant of one hundred acres. A married man was allowed a land grant of one hundred acres for himself, fifty acres for a wife and an additional fifty acres for each child. A single man or a man with a family was allowed for each slave, fifty additional acres of land. These were Crown Grants from the King of England. Andrew Berryhill petitioned for one hundred acres of land in St. George Parish, Colony of Georgia, in December 1768. On this petition Andrew stated that he had lived in the Province of Georgia for some time. In November 1770 Andrew asked to trade this land grant for one hundred acres next to George Galphin, the main trader in the Lower Creek Nation. Alexander Berryhill, who went to Georgia from North Carolina, arrived in Georgia after Andrew did. Alexander petitioned to purchase two hundred fifty acres of land in St. George Parish in December 1772 and it was granted in May 1773. GEORGE THE THIRD, By the Grace of God, of Great-Brition, France, and Ireland, KING, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. Given under the Great Seal of Our Province of Georgia. Witness our Trusty and Well-beloved SIR JAMES WRIGHT, BARONET, CAPTAIN GENERAL, GOVERNOR & COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF OUR SAID -- Province, the FOURTH Day of MAY in the Year of Our Lord 1773 and in the THIRTEENTH Year of Our Reign. (L.S.) JA: WRIGHT Signed by his Excellency, SIR JAMES WRIGHT, Baronet In Council Alex. Wylly, C.C. Reg,d 21 June 1773 S amuel Berryhill was in the Province of Georgia soon after Alexander moved there. I believe that this Samuel Berryhill was another son of old Alexander. The following document was signed by old Alexander Berryhill, and I believe, his son Samuel Berryhill. This document was written in Burke County of St. George Parish during the time that the Province of Georgia was under the rule of King George III. A conferenc e was held at Augusta (St. George Parish) in August 1774. It passed a recommendation on the 10th of August protesting the Stamp Act. There were one hundred fourteen signatures. Included were ALEXANDER BERRYHILL and SAMUEL BERRYHILL. Wednesday Sept. 28 1774 We the Subscribed, inhabitants of the Parish of St. George, in the Province of Georgia, do hereby publicly declare that we entirely disagree to the paper containing resolutions which were drawn up in the City of Savannah, by some persons met there on the 10th of August, 1774; because, although many of us gav e our votes that Mr. Jones and Mr. Lord should go to the said meeting, yet it was because we were told that unless we did send some persons there we would have the Stamp Act put in force. By these and such like arguments, we were prevailed upon to do what we did; but as we find we were deceived, and that the said meetint was intended to draw up a paper that we think reflects very improperly upon our King and the Parliment, and may be of bad consequence to this Province , and can serve no good purpose, we therefore declare that we do not approve of the said paper; and we give our dissent in this public manner. (signed) ALEXANDER BERRYHILL SAMUEL BERRYHILL (and 112 other persons) I believe the sons of old Alexander Berryhill are the brothers listed in Samuel Newton Berryhill's Bible (see Page 327, Chapter Nine): Andrew, Samuel, Alexander, John, and Robert, and probably two daughters. Old Alexander may have married an Indian wife. She could have been from the Catawba Tribe of Indians, whose land was in the area of South Carolina and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Andrew Berryhill, Sr. had some close relationship with the Creek Indians. Following is a pass given to a young Creek Indian woman, by the United States Agent to the Creek Nation, Benjamin Hawkins, to visit Andrew Berryhill in Burke County, Georgia. This is could be the Creek Indian wife and child of one of Andrew Berryhill, Sr.'s sons. Fort Wilkinson, 13 December, 1797. Nancy and her little girl, of the Creek Nation, are on their way to ANDREW BERRYHILL's, near Galphin's Old Town on Ogeechee; she is of a family friendly t o white people. I request my fellow citizens to be attentive to her and treat her with kindness, and direct her on her rout. Benjamin Hawkins Andrew Berryhill, Sr., died in Jefferson County, Georgia about the year of 1806 . Following is a mention of his death in a Georgia newspaper, "The Louisville Courier," date un-known. Andrew Berryhill died at his Plantation near Old Town October 10 - Old inhabitant of the County. "Old Town" was George Galphin's old town. Galphin was the main trader in the Creek Nation and Andrew Berryhill had requested a land grant next to Galphin in 1767. Andrew Berryhill, Sr., of Burke County, Georgia (which later became Jefferson County), was the father of Thomas Berryhill, who left the following Will. I believe that Thomas, and his brothers and sisters named in this Will, were the nieces and nephews of our John Berryhill. In the name of God amen I THOMAS BERRYHILL being in a low state of health tho blessed be God of sound and perfect memory knowing that it is appointed for all men Once to die and that I cannot Survive in my present condidion and also that it is every mans duty to Settle his affairs and prepare for his latter End Do make constitute and appoint this to be my last Will and Testament that is to sa y First I will and bequeath my body to the Dust and my Soul to God who gave it in hopes that He who formed me will have mercy on me:--- Secondly I will and bequeath to my beloved brother SAMUEL two dollars Thirdly I will to my brother ANDREW two dollars Fourthly I will and bequeath to my brother in law HENRY C FUQUA two dollars Fifthly I will and bequeath to my brother JOSEPH five dollar s Sixthly I will and bequeaath to SARAH BERRIHILL Daughter of my brother Samuel one hundred dollars Seventhly I will and bequeath to POLLET BERRIHILL son of Andrew Berryhill one hundred dollars Eightly I will and bequeath to ANDREW AUGUSTA FUQUA one hundred dollars - Ninthly after my debts are paid - I will an d bequeath to my Beloved sister SUSANNA all my property of all dementions - Tenthly I make constitute and appoint, My sister Susanna and Josia Scrutchens t o be my executors of this my last will and Testament in Witnessed where of I have hereunto set my hand and Seal dated in the County of Jefferson and State of Georgia this 27 day of March 1816:-- Signed Sealed and Acknowledged before us-- THOMAS BERRYHILL ELNATHAN DAVIS SHEPHERD GREEN T homas Berryhill had served in the war of 1812, in Company "B" - Bowlin's Detachment of the Georgia Militia. He probably received injuries of which he later died. Some of the sons of Andrew Berryhill, Sr., probably are the Berryhills, other than our John Berryhill, who had Creek Indian wives and are the ancestors of th e other lines of Berryhills in the Creek Indian Nation. The Berryhills in Burke County, Georgia seemed to be involved with George Galphin, Sr., and also the Children of old Daniel Durouzeaux of St. George Parish. Daniel Durouzeaux married Olivia Woods in Charleston, South Carolina in 1848, but James Durouzeaux, who was the father of our Elizabeth (Derrisaw) Berryhill, could be a child of Daniel Durouzeaux by a first wife, maybe a Creek Indian woman. Robert Berryhill served in the War of the Revolution, in the "Georgia Line". A Robert Berryhill and his family were given a pass by the Indian Agent, Benjamin Hawkins, in 1802 to pass through the Indian Country to the Western Territory. This is probably the Robert Berryhill who was in Amite County, Mississippi, in 1805. There was a Robert Berryhill on the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery. If these are two separate people, either could be the brother to our John Berryhill. Thelma Nolen Cornfeld BERRYHILL DESCENDANTS BERRYHILL DESCENDANTS
