The direct genetic bloodline is as follows: Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas l Amber Dawn Deaton Haas l Lonnie Dale Deaton l Bernice "Bernie" Deaton l Sarah Elizabeth Colvin l Nancy Rebecca Hollis l Sarah Satterwhite PROLOGUE: The Satterwhites were "Quakers" (Society of Friends). With the advent of George Fox and the persecution that surrounded the Society of Friends, a great many "Quakers" migrated to the New World. The Register of the Society of Friends at their commencement about 1650 shows the existence of four families in a Hawkshead Meeting. Hawkshead was the name of the area in which they were living. The following is a copy of a certificate given to William Satterthwaite at a monthly meeting in Swathmoore when Mr. Satterthwaite was leaving for America. The note is dated 12-5-1733. "These lines may certify Friends that the bearer hereof William Satterthwaite, son of Michael Satterthwaite and Esther his wife, belonging unto this Monthly Meeting hath this day signified unto us that for some time he hath inclined to remove himself unto your Province, to reside their amongst you. This may certify all to whom it may come, that his removal is with the allowance and approbation of his parents, with whom he had a sober education and hath been since the time minority of a sober and orderly life and conversation, and is clear from all women in these parts on account of marriage, as far as we know, and also clear of contracting of any debts, being an able and industrious workman in the tilling of the ground or husbandry, according to the manner of this county. We do recommend him as a person in union and fellowship with us, and your care, sincerely desiring he may be preserved in the way of piety and virtue and, that your regard may be unto him for his food in all respects. So with sincere love we conclude and remain your Friends and Brethren." This document is signed by Michael Satterthwaite, Ester Satterthwaite, Elizabeth Satterthwaite, John Satterthwaite, and others who were members of the Society of Friends. THE MEANING OF THE NAME "SATTERWHITE": The surname "Satterwhite" is derived from the geographical location from which these people came. It refers to a "settlement in the thwiate or woodland clearing." The Satterwhites were "Norsemen" who first migrated to England and then on to America. Susan's father was likely Robert Bartee who was in Wilkes Co., GA, by 1795. The LWT of Agnes Williams, widow of Judge John Williams lists the following—the judge's granddaughters as Peggy and Ancy Satterwhite and his grandsons as Edwin and Horace Satterwhite. The LWT is dated 3-29-1802. Susan died after 1858. Edward and Susan were members of the Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church near Pine Mountain, GA, on 2-1829 when the church was established. They were also charter members of the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church when it was organized 10-13-1829. Evidently they changed churches?? This Presbyterian church was located between Big Springs and Mountville. Edward is listed on the 1825 tax list of Jones Co., GA. On 7-19-1829 he served as witness to a deed between John Manning and James Satterwhite in Jones Co. On 11-28-1835, he purchased 202 acres of land from a certain N. Hutchinson in Harris Co., GA. This family appears in the 1850 census of Harris Co., GA. Edward died intestate but did leave " a settlement of estate" in Harris Co., GA. There is oral family history suggesting that Susan Bartee was a Cherokee Indian. Some family members have her a full blooded Indian and others have her half Indian. John married Elizabeth "Eliza" Parker on 12-12-1849. Elizabeth was born ca 1826 in GA. John is not mentioned in the settlement of his father's estate in 1854. Isaiah Parker was the administrator of the estate but his widow Elizabeth Parker, received only a child's share. John's estate was inventoried 3-16-1855. The appraisers were Jefferson Daniel, James Sterling, and Isaac Satterwhite. The administrator was Edward Satterwhite. He sold the perishable property ( livestock, corn, and tools) for $314.76. The total estate was valued at $522.05. On 3-4-1862, Fleming Parker and James Thompson were appointed guardians for the person and property of John's orphaned children, Elmira L., and John Satterwhite. Jefferson Daniel was named guardian of John M. Satterwhite(Jr.) On 12-1867. Jefferson Daniel was the 2nd husband of Elizabeth Parker Satterwhite. They were married 4-23-1872. In the 1860 census of Harris Co., Ga, Isaiah Parker is recorded as living in HH 912. Living with him is Eliza Satterwhite (his daughter) and her children, Sophronia and John Satterwhite. She is buried in the Sardis Cemetery in Harris Co. Fleming died 11-15-1914 in Sardis and is also buried in the Sardis Cemetery. In 1791, David Satterwhite was granted 200 acres of land in Richmond Co., GA, but did not take immediate possession of this land and if he ever occupied this land it was not for any great length of time. On 4-7-1798, David obtained a Tennessee passport to "Indian lands for the purpose of taking grain now growing and to remove stock and other property from the Indian lands." In 1808 he served as the power of attorney for a certain Millinor Hammock in Jones Co., GA. He sold her land to Stephen Satterwhite. On 12-6-1810 David sold land to John Childs. This appears to be the same land that was sold to Stephen Satterwhite. David appears on the Jones Co., Ga., tax list for the year 1811 and he appears in the 1820 census of Jones Co., Ga. In 1824, the LWT of Adam Manning, on file in Putnam Co., GA., states "that James Satterwhite, my son-in-law, and David Satterwhite, his father, choose out of my personal estate of any description or kind....for the support of my wife." David appears in the 1830 census of Harris Co., Ga. Also in 1830, he is recorded as selling 101 acres of land in Jones Co., to a Jesse Pitts. Further, in 1830 he was a "moderator" of the Falls Shoals Church. EPILOGUE: It is interesting to note that the 1850 census of Harris Co., GA, has Edward Satterwhite, father of Sarah Satterwhite, being born in Ohio. Your author has been unable to find any explanation for this. Neither do other Satterwhite researchers have an explanation for this notation. One must wonder if this is not an error. In 1801, the year Edward was born, his father is recorded as owning property in TN. Further, none of Edward's siblings were born in Ohio. The United States census records are incredibly valuable for researching family history; but on occasion the information provided by the informant was inaccurate and also, on occasion, the census takers made clerical errors. This may well have been what happened here. It does seem unlikely that Edward Satterwhite was born in Ohio. There is oral family history suggesting that Susan Bartee, Edward's wife, was a Native American. This does seem unlikely and your author has not been able to confirm this but certainly would be proud should this prove to be true. David Satterwhite, before migrating to Georgia, first moved to Granger and Blount Cos., TN. Blount and Granger are neighboring counties of Sevier, where your author currently lives. It was the Georgia Land Lotteries that brought David Satterwhite to Georgia and it is there that the Satterwhites met up with the Hollis family. They remained together for seventy-five years. They migrated together from Georgia to Alabama, to Texas, to Oklahoma. Your author is glad they did!! For the most part, the Satterwhites did well for themselves. They left a "paper trail" of LWTs, deeds, etc., and were sufficiently affluent to be the owners of "slaves." Most affluent families of South were, indeed, slave owners; thus, their situation was commonplace. Your author wished to express his sincere appreciation to David Morgan, Dana Gard and Dorothy Pantier for sharing their research of the Satterwhite family and , thus, making my humble effort here reproduced possible. I am proud to call these folks "cousins" and hope one day soon to meet them face to face, hugs their necks, and let them know that I am proud to be "their kin." I also hope to encourage some of the younger generations of our "clan" to "take up the torch" and continue researching our family. APPENDIX a1,2. LWT of Obediah Satterwhite. a3-5.
